High morning BG

Last night I took the family out to a favorite Indian restaurant. I had Chicken Madras with plain white rice, (about three tablespoons full), one and a half poppadoms, a chapatti, and two glasses of red wine. This was at 1930. Two hours later I had BG reading of 5.4. This morning at 0900 I had a BG of 9.6, despite having nothing since my evening meal. What makes the BG rise when I've had nothing to eat in all that time?
 
I find the same. Are you currently on any medication?

I pretty much had the same meal too last night, but had caulirice instead of white rice and chapatti using Fiberflour. Post meal it was around 6 but 8.9 this morning. I may have had some chocolate too though. The red wine may have dropped your levels and caused a more severe morning rise.

Have you read up on the Dawn Phenomenon? Seems that morning figures can be high for a number of us.
 
That will be the dreaded dawn phenomenon. We all suffer from that to some degree. It's the liver pumping out glucose getting you ready for the day ahead. Having something quite carby the night before will make it worse.

Hi, I'm on 160mg Gliclazide morning, and 80 mid-day (just changed from night time). I've just been reading about the Dawn Phenomenon, and it certainly makes sense. Amazing what you can learn on this forum.

Does the liver make glucose or does it extract it from our blood for later use?
Yesterday my morning reading was 7.5 rising to 8.6 two hours later, today 7.2 in the morning, exactly the same breakfast (dry fried egg and one slice of wholemeal from the same loaf) and a mug of tea with sweetener and the two hour reading was 9.4, why the difference?

No question is stupid, it's just something you don't know the answer to. As I understand it, the liver stores glucose, and releases it when it deems it necessary. ( eg, when you're exercising, when you're stressed, when your blood sugar has dropped) Once it's depleted its stores, it fills them up again by extracting glucose from the blood stream. This is why some people find their BG levels go down 24 hrs after they've exercised, it's the liver replenishing.

about 42 different reasons why your blood sugar might vary, makes interesting reading! Also, remember that blood sugar monitors only have to be within 10% accuracy, (15% at higher levels). We tend to take our meter readings as cast in stone...but they're not!
