Hi everyone,
Hope you all ok? My HBA1c was 10.5% before christmas just had my results back this week and it was 8.5% me and my partner are desperate to start trying for a baby i am taking pre-conception vitamins and the 5mg folic acid but I am so frustrated and scfared cant see how i am going to get my sugars down to 6.5% or around 7%. Just wondering if anyone has any advice tips for me and any stories to share. Everything on the internet are horror stories just want to hear from someone that has or is in the same situation as me.
Thanx in advance

Hi Pinkemz, welcome to the forum 🙂 Some of the mums may have more specific advice to help, but I know we have several members who are/have been in your position, so don't worry! What sort of insulin regime are you on and when were you diagnosed? Sounds like you've already made a great improvement and it's actually better that the improvement is more gradual than a sudden big drop.

Hi pinkemz. Welcome from me too 🙂

As Northerner says, you're going in the right direction. It may take a bit more time but better to gradually ease it down than shock the body with a huge, sudden change.

If you test regularly and take the appropriate action, eating the types of food that don't send your BGs sky high along with some exercise and as much of a routine as possible, you will improve your chances no end.

thanks guys. Yes my team is aware that i want to conceive they suggested that i start on the folic acid and they referred me to pre-conception clinic. I am on humalog and lantus now. I take 44 units of my lantus I dont take set doses for the humalog im carb counting 1 unit per 10g of carbs. I have been type 1 for 6 years now. I have to say only recently i am coming to terms with it. College and university seemed much more important to me years ago but i am paying for it now so frustrated.

Hopefully you'll find out more than your clinic can ever teach you from the forum.

That's one hell of a dose of lantus. Have you considered splitting the dose to morning and evening ?

hi i was in this position last year and i worked hard to get my sugars down and now im pregnant. I did it gradually, but honestly the best motivation is the fact you want the healthiest place for baby to grow. Check sugars, correct and record is the key i think i found. sometimes you dont notice a pattern until its in black and white and the dsns can help more if they have firm info. I tested all the time and corrected every time. im also on a pump though which is a lot easier to control basals etc. It is best to reduce your hba1c slowly though as ive read people having problems coming down too fast. Hope you get your hba1c down soon, please dont be tempted to just go for it before your sugars are not down as its not best for baby (im sure you know this) but some people do have that attitude

Thanx for your advise guys. I will def not be trying before i get my HBA1c down. What were your hba1c before you got pregnant?

I will speak to my diabetic nurse about taking lantus morning and afternoon. I am going to the hospital on the 24th and im going to talk to the dr about going on a pump.

Thanks again everyone loads of help and support😉

Just another thing to think about. Your insulin senesitivity may vary across the day so you have a slightly different ratio at breakfast, lunch and teatime.

May help you get your BG a bit more stable if you find the pre/post meal tests are a bit high or low in places.

It means you'll need a calculator to work out how much humalog to take but can tweak your HbA1c down a bit more.🙂

Thank you all for your advice.
sugarfreearch quick question. How long did it take you to get it down to 7%.

I find im more strict now testing all the time and im having more hypos is this normal?

well i only started with a hba1c of 8 but that was on a pump. I had a hba1c of 10 3 years ago but i wasnt trying very hard to get it down. It took me to drop a percentage in 2 months

Its better to avoid hypos if possible as they can do damage over time. If you try tweaking your ratios at mealtimes or just go for 1 unit less bolus and see what it does to your BG. If you find it's either too high or too low, I wonder if you could find some standardised meals to eat ?

I have the same breakfast every day just for convenience. It takes a bit of guesswork out of the day.

Many peoples' ratios can be twice as much at midday as in the morning or evening.

Less than my 48 units of Lantus then! 😱

Hi Pinkemz,

My latest HBA1c last month was 7.8, i do probably drink a bit too much wine! and I'm not that careful with what I eat 😉 but since carb-counting for the last 6 months or so my HBA1c has come down from the usual high 8s and 9s so quite pleased, still not sure about my basal though!

Hello

My hba1c was 8.4 when i started going to a pre pregnancy clinic. 9 months later I got it down to 7.4 and we were given the go ahead to start ttc. I had/have a lot if hypos somt hey said that level was fine. Throughout my pregnancy by hba1c was around 6.6. It took a lot of dedication to get these levels, I had an extra shot of humalog early in the mornings to combat the dawn phenomenon and was v strict about what i ate and the timings of my injections. It was really tough but so worth it, I now have a beautiful almost 6 month old baby 🙂

congrats rach. Its so good to hear from someone who has delivered a healthy pregnancy. Were you on a pump. I really dont know how i am going to get it down further i am hoping that the doctor will agree and give me a pump next week. My sugars are awful when im at work- i think its the stress of teaching ha ha no excuse tho. it is much better recently. and like some of you said here and it is sooo true. when you thinking of a baby your priorities change.

Did you have any complications through pregnancy? How did you get your hba1c down any tips?

Phil that sounds brilliant to me i would be so happy to have a hba1c under 8% i think you are doing really well. Good for you!!!!:D
