Hi,

I have been suffering from high bloods for over a month, regularly above 30. I have been working with my specialist nurse and have managed to get it down to the mid to low teens and are still working on dosages to improve that. The issue I have is that I am getting really bad stomach pains. Does anyone else suffer from this and have you been able to stop it? It causes issues due to not wanting to eat then starts to affect my ketones, so a catch 22 really. My bloods have been around 13-15 for a few days now but the pains are still there.

Just for info I am taking 30 units of Lantus at night and anywhere between 18 & 24 units of nova Rapid just before meals (dependant on sugar levels)

I look forward to hopefully hearing something that might help.

Thanks all.

Symon.

Sorry to read about your stomach pains @SBorny
You mention ketones - I believe stomach pains can be a symptom of high ketones. Could this be related?

Alternatively, it may be one of those frustrating things that the cause of your stomach pains are unrelated to your diabetes but are causing your blood sugars to rise. Have you spoke to anyone else about your stomach pain apart from your diabetes team?
For me, high blood sugar often emphasise any ache, pain, sniff or cough so I would be increasing my basal insulin to bring my blood sugars down and, hopefully, reduce the exaggeration of the pain.

After my diagnosis when I was at 35.0 blood glucose, I dropped to 10.0 very quickly and suffered a range of pains, some of which are still with me but manageable.

I did have abdominal pains for a few weeks but they subsided reasonably quickly afterwards. Hopefully this is the case for you too.

Have other causes of the pain beenruled out?
Hi,

To be honest I haven't had anything else looked yet as my specialist nurse said it is common with high blood sugars. Especially with everything else going on I don't want to put the NHS under any more strain than they already are. I will keep an eye on it over the next few days and hopefully it will have subsided.

Cheers,

Symon.

My thoughts were as you are a 3c was it Pancreatitis?

Hi,

It was the pancreas that caused it, 0 bouts in 5 years basically means it has stopped working. It is a different pain as well.

Thanks for suggesting that though. 🙂

Hi,

Thanks for responding. I have had raised ketones 0.8. It just seems that it has only happened since the high bloods and ketones.

Cheers,

Symon.

Do keep a close eye on things if your ketones rise further Symon.

Abdominal pain, nausea, breathlessness and vomiting in the presence of elevated ketones can indicate DKA which would need urgent medical attention.

Have you been advised about ‘sick day rules’?

Hi Mike, thankfully I have now managed to get the bloods sugars down and the ketones back in normal range. Yes I am aware of the sick day rules.

Thanks for the advise.

Regards,

Symon.
