I have just been to the nurse for the 3rd time to have my blood pressure taken because it was high. It is always higher at the surgery than at home. I have 3 blood pressure monitors and they always have roughly the same reading. I get so stressed about having it taken. Now I have been referred to the doctor to have it taken again and for him to review my medication. I take 5mg Rampiril. I know it will be high when I go back it has been high every time I have taken it since I came back from the surgery because I feel so stressed. Do you think the doc with increase my medication. I do like a drink at weekends but surely if this was the cause my blood pressure would be high when I take it at home. I'm going to the doctors at 3.30 and I feel so pressed I just know it will be sky high :(

Sebstar, this is very common and recognised by most doctors as 'white coat syndrome' - I suffer from it too! If your doctor is not persuaded by the evidence of your home readings (mine accepted my home readings were a better indication of my BP than the surgery readings), then perhaps you could ask for a 24-hour BP meter? These take your BP throughout a normal day and give a much better picture of your BP. Far better than having to increase your medication unnecessarily (and with the possible consequence of making your 'real' BP too low!). 🙂

what is the reading at home? I have a similar problem but I am scared of the electronic meters! When the doctor uses the hand pump one, my blood pressure is fine

I never thought about this...............I dont like the throbbing feeling you get with the electronic versions, this may be contributing to my high readings, probably not significantly though...........

Got my BP meds doubled last week, was not happy as I have packed in the fags and still have slightly high BP............:(

Mine on the electronic one was 170/95 and on the manual one was 130/75 ish. Ask them to check for you just incase!

Mines the same on whichever one they use. At home mine can be anything from 118/74 to 155/83. I have noticed that it is often higher in the morning I wonder if that is because the medication is wearing off. But it is always sky high when I go to the surgery I'm stressed out just thinking about it and I keep taking my blood pressure and it keeps going up 😱

I'm the same - whichever the doctor uses it is much higher than at home. I even get a bit tense with the one at home! It can vary a lot throughout the day so I try and take mine at different times of the day to make sure that I am getting a good overall picture. Do ask for one of the 24 hour ones to see if it helps 🙂

I got put on one of them..........not so good during the night................

The results were normal, so they said............

Well what do you know it was 197 by the time I got to the Docs it's already started to come down since I got home. I'm on increased dosage so lets see if that works. By the way the doctor couldn't get the manual one to work and the one they use in the surgery didn't work she had to use her own personal one 🙄

Mine at the Docs is alway 150 plus, but at home about 110, but since losing weight it has dropped and got too low, dizzy etc.

Dr now changed medication after I took a record of my at home readings, verified with a second meter, and it is now climbing back up to a better level.

I read in the press a while back that "white coat syndrome" is now a recognised problem such that GP's are recommended to encourage home readings.

At the moment my Doc and DSN are erring and humming about my BP..

I spoke to the new GP last week, and he advised me which make of BP meter to get as he wanted some home readings, but I was to see my DSN today and get my meter compared to the manual one so that we know if or how similar they are..

And that is what I did today, the manual one read slightly higher than my home meter..

I've been advised to take at least one in the morning and one late evening, then if I chose varying times during this period,,

I'm booked into see my DSN in a fortnight to review the results..

The 155/83 figure is classed as high bp so the increase in medication maybe isn't a bad thing.

I'm another white coat man who's bp is always up at the surgery, sometimes they'll tell me to sit outside and relax for 10 minutes by which time it has come down to normal when they test again. I take my home readings in with me and doc just goes from them when assessing bp, my bp last friday was 116/68.

Hi Sebster I have had a lot of pressure tests & when i was in hosp for a long time i started looking at readings. If i shut up & let the doc or nurse take reading was fine. If i was rabbiting on & talking to them reading was higher !! So learnt to shut up & behave !!! (Have never had HIGH blood pressure in life) Sit back & let them get on with it !! 😎😎

If you have a meter at home make sure it is an arm cuff machine - the wrist ones are not supposed to be very accurate.

My BP is normally about 95/55
Yep I take meds to keep it that high 🙄

I did complain to my DSN today about seeing our new GP..

Well it's not fair sending somebody to have their BP taken by a young GP who's got the swoon factor🙄
