Hi, I’m newly diagnosed as Type 2 (a month ago). It’s great that there is this site, at least I know I’m not alone. I’m actually feeling really cross with myself for not taking more care and preventing this happening. I’ve been on steroids for PMR for the last 2 years and was warned at the beginning that it would increase the risk of diabetes. I have a caresens machine and had been checking my blood sugar levels approx once a month. Also had cut down on my carb intake to try and help, no pasta, rice or normal bread. Has anyone else felt like this? Currently on Metformin twice a day and my average reading now first thing in the morning is 5.4 (take once a week) which according to anything I’ve read is ok.

sorry to write the equivalent of a book but this is all so new.

Don’t apologise for sharing your story and experiences so far - that’s what the forum is here for!

Well done on making such positive changes to your meal plan. Reducing your carb intake certainly seems to have helped your body to regulate your glucose levels more effectively.

Don’t be too hard on yourself about your diagnosis. Steroids affect some people’s BG levels more significantly than others, and you certainly weren’t intentionally aiming for a diabetes diagnosis!

The more experiences I read on the forum, the more I feel that there’s a lot more to diabetes than meets the eye. You could have two people who behaved just the same, and one would develop diabetes, while the other never would - even if they really fell off the wagon.

Sorry to read about you CFS and mobility challenges - does that make activity hard for you? Are there lower-impact forms of exercise (swimming? aquafit?) that you can manage?
 
Hi everydayupsanddowns, thank you for your very kind and also practical words, very much appreciated. You’re absolutely right, I didn’t intentionally aim for a diabetes diagnosis, I hadn’t actually thought of it like that.

Activity is certainly a challenge, until the beginning of this year I was going on some good walks but my hip has got to the stage that I cannot do that now. Swimming has been out as I’m considered clinically extremely vulnerable, (in fact have been a little unwell since beginning of September, summer cold turned into chest infection then sepsis) another reason the walking was so good. I live out in the sticks so could go out walking and not see another person. I tried cycling, my husband bought me an electric bike, but again my stupid hip decided to play up when I was a couple of miles from home, it kept catching so I couldn’t peddle and ended up having to walk my bike home lol.
Anyway I do have an exercise bike and I’m trying to gradually use that, at least I won’t have to walk it home.

I’m sure that the more I read on the forum the more ideas I’ll get.
