Hi everyone

I have had diabetes for over 30 years and didn't realise foolishly that things like this forum existed. Probably because I'm older than 25 lol. I have had many health problems in the past and will be glad to give anyone any help and advice when needed so feel free to contact if you need to

Thanks
Barry

Welcome Barry & well done for your 30yrs ! To say its a right pain is an under statement but pls keep at it 😎

Welcome Barry . You must have seen a lot of changes over the years.

Had eye problems 20 years ago due to bad control, smoking and great weekends out but learnt my lesson!

Biggest thing I’ve found is I never ever used to test my blood sugars but test at least 10 times a day how, don’t smoke, I exercise 5 times per week and eat healthily. Boring I know but good fun really

I also find that eating less carbs, doing less insulin means better control.

I take insulators and novorapod and I get along fabulously with it

Welcome to the forum Barry. 🙂 Glad you're managing things okay now. I was diagnosed in 1986 as well, got 10 years on you though as I was 18.

Never tried the pump heard it’s great. What do you think?

Hello Barry, welcome from me too. I'm just a tad over the 25 too🙂. Forums were new to me too when I joined. I've picked up plenty of hints and tips, even after all this time and it's also given me an appreciation of what others deal with.

10+ testing a day used to be me, but like others on the forum I find the Libre very helpful..is it something you've thought about?

Thanks Hobie

Well done Barry. Its hard but worth it. I was diagnosed in 1966 aged 3. Now full of holes :D:D

Hi Lisa

Yes I saw that advertised but I couldn’t get one because they have sold out I heard. I only found I have to buy it from America. Is that right?

If you know anywhere in the uk I can get it that would be great?

Thanks

I think Abbot had supply problems earlier this year, and closed their online shop to new customers ( though it was still possible to buy them via a pharmacy) but since July, their online ordering is back up and fully functioning, so you should be able to order one direct from Abbot.

As Robin has mentioned I think Abbott have now sorted their supply problems. A few members of the forum have mentioned getting sensors (not sure about readers) from other outlets such as Asda I think...not every Asda
though, I think they are a little bit cheaper than from Abbott directly. Might be worth a search of the forum.

It might also be worth asking your specialist team or GP if they will provide them on prescription. It may not be very likely that they will provide them, provision around the country is very patchy, so don't hold your breath.

I had been self funding until earlier this year. My consultant just asked if I'd like to go on a 6 month trial. I said I thought I didn't meet the criteria, as they always seem pretty pleased with my results. Anyway, she seems to think if we'd like one and think we'd benefit then we should have one. So along with other type 1s locally, I'm on the trial and my consultant and DSN are confident our GPs will see the improved control and let us continue. So fingers crossed. If only all areas were like this. I do consider myself very fortunate to have a very proactive team locally.

Anyway, for the cost of a couple of phone calls you might just be lucky....it's got to be worth an ask.🙂
