Relationship to Diabetes
Hi, I`m new and looking to learn more about diabetes 🙂. My partner has type one and is on the daffne method. He can get really bad acne on his back as a side effect from the insulin and wondered if anyone else either has this on knows someone who has has this? Thanks 🙂

welcome to the forum someone with more knowledge than me will be along before too long

Hi Summersun01, welcome to the forum 🙂 I haven't heard of acne being a side-effect of insulin before, what insulin does he use? As far as I am aware the only common side-effect of insulin is hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), when insulin doses exceed requirements for numerous reasons, although I have heard of some rare allergies to the synthetic medium of insulin analogues (i.e. not animal insulins).

Probably the best book available about Type 1 is Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents by Ragnar Hanas. Don't be put off by the title, it is applicable to all ages (I'm 56!) - it is the best reference guide on the subject available, and very well written. Of course, you are also more than welcome to ask any questions you may have here! How long has your partner been diagnosed, and how is he managing with his diabetes?

For Novomix 30 (to which I was switched yesterday, because my control on Insulatard is no longer very good), the PIL gives the following information:

Uncommon side effects
May affect less than 1 in 100 people.

Signs of allergy: Local allergic reactions (pain, redness, hives, inflammation, bruising, swelling and itching) at the injection site may occur.

(emphases in original)

So it's certainly something to bring up at the next appointment.

Welcome to the forum. 🙂

Hi, thanks for your replies. He's been diabetic for over 30 years (he's also in his 50s) He was very late being diagnosed and by the time he was his eyesight had already been affected (he's completely blind in one eye and partly blind in the other). He was given pigs insulin to start with which he had a bad reaction to which already affected his skin (scars). When I asked him about his back, he said it was acne due to the insulin he is on now. I wandered how common this was?
