Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone
I'm a type 2 diabetic and I've been in remission for 5/6 years. I managed to come off 5 insulin injections a day plus Metformin night and morning and have controlled my diabetes with diet and excecise but my last two 6 month bloods were a bit too near the cut off point for comfort. I've been suffering from depression and have done a bit of comfort eating but have made the decision to try and loose weight again. Would appreciate the support of fellow diabetics especially as I'm fighting an uphill battle because I'm on a massive dose of betablockers which has slowed my heart and my metabolism right down. Just feel I'm at the start of a long battle.
Thanks for reading my post. Any support will be appreciated. Look after yourselves

Welcome to the forum.
Do you know what your HbA1C is that is indicating things have drifted a bit as that will indicate how much you need to do to get it back to your remission level. I suppose it does illustrate the fragility of 'being in remission' that circumstances conspire to push levels up again.
Have a look at this link as there may be some ideas that you can adopt to help with those higher level. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/

Some may suggest that you may not actually be Type 2 but LADA which is a slowly developing Type 1 so if some dietary changes don't help, it might be worth asking your GP to consider this.

Any time you think you can't do it come back and read that quote. You've done it before and you can do it again. It must have been hard work and a long struggle but you managed it - so you already know you can do it.

Welcome to the forum @Momobridget

Sounds like you’ve been doing amazingly well for several years, so give yourself proper credit for that.

Remission in T2 is a relatively new concept for healthcare researchers (previously diabetes was generally said by many Drs to be an inevitably progressive condition). We have members on the forum who have been meeting some definitions of the term for years, or even decades, but who considered their position to be ‘well managed diabetes’ rather than remission as such.

Sorry to hear about your struggles with depression and the way that has impacted on your diabetes management. Diabetes can be relentless, and exhausting, and it’s important to be able to treat yourself as a whole person. Sometimes the strategies we employ to take the pressure off our mental health challenges, can have knock-on consequences elsewhere.

Are you getting help and support for your mental health? Trying to understand and address some of the contributing circumstances can be really valuable. You may be able to get a referral for counselling or talking therapies, or ‘social prescribing’ help with access to things like clubs, activities etc.

Well done on your determination to lose any weight your comfort-eating may have gained. Shedding excess weight can be a big help in reducing insulin resistance, and helping organs to function efficiently - especially if you have a tendency to gain visceral fat around your abdomen.

Keep asking away with any questions you have, and sharing your experiences here. We are right behind you, cheering you on 🙂
