Not new but haven't been in here in a very long time. Type 2 for eleven years and struggling with low carb diet as I have IBS and a dairy intolerance. Last Hba1c was 78 was due another test tomorrow but I am poorly. Any tips for someone that can't tolerate green vegetables, onion family or nuts . I know I am a nightmare

Hi @snowball12 Some T2D's on both Twitter and 'the red forum' have been eating carnivore i.e. predominantly animal products for several years as their easiest way to achieve a Keto diet. Apparently eating meat and especially liver, they don't even suffer from Vitamin C deficiency! So meat, fish, eggs. They tend to eat cheese and dairy, but you could eat any low carb veg you can tolerate. Cauliflower? Aubergine? Courgette? Celeriac? Avocado?- yes I know it's a fruit!

I can't tolerate any lactose free produce. I manage on oat milk. The only veg I like is carrots and tomatoes. I know I am a nightmare

I could never cope with the keto as I don't think all that protein is a good thing for anyone! but that's my opinion. I didn't mention I am on 2000mg of Metformin SR and Duloxetine 120mg for Clinical Depression per day. GP also insists I take 20 mg Asorvastatin and 1.25 Ramipril as precautionary medication. My cholesterol was 4! at the time, it's now 2.4.

What about Soya milk as that is much lower carb than oat milk.
The problem is that carbs are the problem for Type 2 folk but protein and fats are not and if cutting carbs to help with blood glucose the body has to get energy from somewhere and that is the protein and fats.
Yes full blown keto is not easy.
Have you tried using other veg, having them raw or in soups?

I have no sugar oat milk which is lower than Soya and agrees with my IBS. I am trying the low carb but could never cope without any carbs. I really try with veg but I hate them and have done since a child. I am now 57! I will see how the low carb goes. My problem is I don't enjoy food anymore

The Alpro no sugar oat one is 5.5g carb per 100ml but soya no sugar 0g carb per 100ml
I suppose it depends on the brand.

Welcome back @snowball12 🙂

Glad to hear you have been finding ways to balance your diabetes and IBS and their different dietary requirements - especially when some of the things that suit others don’t appeal to you. Managing long-term conditions alongside depression can be a real challenge, so be kind to yourself and recognise how well you are doing.

There are lots of folks here managing their diabetes in different ways, and developing their own individual diabetes-friendly meal plan that aims to balance blood glucose alongside any other conditions they have.

The most important thing is to find a way of eating that works for you 🙂 Hope you can rediscover your enjoyment around food.

have you tried celeriac, it's quite nice and makes a good mash potato substitute.
