Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi

I have just been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 33 years old.
I went to my Dr unable to walk properly, 2 months ago, they ran test for MS and diabetes showed up!!
After trial with tablets while waitin on results, they decided they wouldn't work for me.
I have now been on insulin for 2 weeks and slowly starting to get regular bloods below 10.
I've been told that once my body adjusts and blood gets settled my legs with get better so fingers crossed. It would be interesting to see if others have had this issue.
Anyway I thought I'd say Hi and thank everyone for the support and advise they provide, even just reading through a handful of posts I've learned so much.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm a new type 2 and know nowt about type 1. Hopefully some one will be along soon.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have had a rough time. Hope your legs get back to normal soon. I can't say that happened to me, but then there are lots of different experiences on here.

Hi Susan, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis :( What insulin are you on? There is something called 'transient neuropathy' which some people can suffer from, and tends to occur when you have higher than normal levels for a while (often in the build up to diagnosis, as in your case). Hopefully, this is what it is, and you should improve before too long 🙂 I had some problems with sharp pains in my feet before and shortly after diagnosis, but this disappeared after a few weeks and getting things under control 🙂

I'd recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents by Ragnar Hanas - don't pay too much attention to the title, it's packed with information whatever your age! 🙂 Please let us know if we can help in any way 🙂

Thanks for the welcome and advice.

I am injecting humilog and humilin (badly lol) at the moment. Low dosage of set amounts, I go in a week to start managing my dosage with carb intake.

Hi Susan. When I was first diagnosed, I was finding walking similar to wading through treacle. I didn't seem to have any strength in my muscles, and my legs ached after walking up a not very steep hill back to my house. This was because ( I now know, and should have gone to the doctors sooner!) in the absence of insulin, the glucose can't get into the muscles to fuel them up.
I hope things settle down for you quickly. Any questions, ask away, there's a mine of experience on here.

Thanks for this, it's rubbish this happened to you too but oddly comforting to find it's happened to someone else. As they suspected MS to start with, I still have to have an MRI scan to rule that out, but this helps so much!

I had problems walking too. It was when I couldn't manage the stairs at work that I had to admit something was seriously amiss.

It's such a relief to know this happened to others as even my GP thought it was bizarre

Welcome SusanMcG.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. There is a lot to learn at the start but your DSNs will take you through this step by step, and if you have any questions just keep asking them and on here. There are loads of people on here with lots of experience, who are only too willing to help.

Welcome to the forum 🙂
I had a similar experience with the muscle pain, so I can empathise. Hope you're starting to feel a bit better now 🙂
Loads of lovely people on this forum, so ask lots of questions!

Hi and welcome to forum

Hi Susan and welcome to the forum. Things should hopefully start to settle down for you and you'll soon get the hang of it. Lots of friendly advice and support on here. 🙂

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm afraid that I can't say how I felt when I was first diabetic because I was only two.

Hi Susan - must admit, I'm rather surprised at the Humulin being prescribed - the Gold Standard long-acting insulin for new Type 1s is Levemir - you do actually have to jab it twice a day instead of once - but since it makes things far easier to control once you are on it - IMHO it's actually easier in the finish.

Not 'me' saying this just as some random diabetic you understand - it's NICE who say this in their latest official Guideline! - so Doctors and Nurses should be doing it.

The main thing wrong with Humulin I from a Type 1 point of view, is that the 'I' is for 'intermediate' - so it isn't a true longer-acting insulin like Levemir (or Lantus) - neither is it a shorter-acting one - like Humalog, Novorapid and Apidra are. So you won't know when it will peak when it won't, what it will do when. This is 100% fine if you have an exceedingly fixed lifestyle and dietary pattern - doing exactly the same things every day, at the same time, eating much the same things at much the same times, and not having the flexibility to miss a meal completely or eat more sometimes - or suddenly deciding to do the decorating or mow the lawn instead of sitting quietly twiddling your thumbs like you usually do LOL Not !

But anyway - it's early days - but if they don't offer to swap it for something a bit more modern!! - I think you'd better ask.
