Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi guys we are all members of one of the biggest clubs on the planet! So we re in great company, I have been diagnosed with type 1 for over 25years so have seen many changes over this time. I had also suffered a heart attack 5years ago (resulting in stents fitted) but am glad to say I am still here! Thanks to the good old NHS...I have learnt a lot about DBM and can gladly report that all the careful monitoring has helped a lot, I have found over the years that jo public have very little understanding of diabetes, although in their defence it is very confusing with so many different types, all needing different regimes to contend with, even some medical staff seem to lack awareness. Just would be nice if restaurants could clue themselves up.

Hi Woody, welcome to the forum 🙂 You're in good company here, we'd agree about Joe Public - although diabetes can confuse us at times too! 😱 🙂 What are you using now - pump or pens?

Hi your right there, I have met very many confused diabetics, two of my 5 brothers (and 6 sisters) are type 2 and they struggle at times Just wish that some places that serve food knew what carbs are, and how they can be an issue to us! I have been using a pen for many years on
Humalog 25 mix (40 units x 2 daily) I use a Accutrend mobile BM great bit of kit, best I have tried (of the many) testing 3 times a day : breakfast , dinner, and MOST IMPORTANLY before bed. I tried out a Abbot freestyle libre ( £52 from sainsburys no VAT) seems to work very well, but often gives readings 1-2 higher than the BM, not a problem as the up/down trend Is more useful, anyway if I did BM tests in quick succession they will often differ by this amount! Shame we can't get them on prescription yet, I was in France last week and met a guy using FSL he told me that it was all he used for BM because they are FREE on percription there, how much longer will we have to wait here?

The Libre is already on prescription here Woody, just depends on whether you fir the criteria for it - at the moment they are a bit limited in some areas, unfortunately :( I've got one on at the moment (I paid for it) and it's reading 1-2 lower than blood for me! 🙄 As you say though, the trend arrows are useful 🙂

Some places still refuse to supply Libre on prescription whether you fit or not, postcode lottery is alive and well in Leicestershire..
Testing 3 times a day is unimaginable for me, with the libre I might test 30 or more times a day with perhaps 5-10 blood tests to catch when the libre is lying.
I simply don't know my body well enough to go on feel alone and 3 tests would be like blindfolding me!
But congrats @Woodykcw if not for the management then for getting any food at all with all those brothers and sisters fighting for it!

Hi Woodykcw, welcome to the forum . I love my Libre, it’s helped my control no end and my finger are much happier now .
Their is so much misinformation out there about diabetes I include some medics and nurses in this and as for that healthy eating plate or whatever it’s called now 😱.

Hello Woodykcw and welcome , glad you found us 🙂

I keep my diabetes well away from Joe Public at all times! Good to hear the Libre is helping you so much.

Hi Woody and welcome to the forum.

I agree with you regarding the benefits of using the Libre. I am one of the lucky ones who gets it on prescription, after self funding for a couple of years.

Hello Woody🙂. No Libre in this part of Devon :(.

Hi Christophe 5 brothers and 6 Sisters tich nothing I also have 7 half brothers and sisters too! ...Dad wanted to start his own football team feeding was a regular bun fight, you had to eat very quickly else you lost dinner

@Woodykcw .. your dad sounds like he wanted two teams!
I can imagine the fight for food but can't imagine what the food might be.. got a picture in my mind of a whole roast ox being towed in and all these kids going like piranhas!

Hi Roast anything would have been nice! Try cow heel and tripe, followed by rice pudding with apricot jam. Only thing roasted we got was on Christmas Day, roast capon with boiled cabbage and spuds! Don't feel sorry for me now I have a great life, with a great family, and great food. My upbringing taught me a lot of useful skills and how to cope in adverse situations, diabetes being one of them!
