Hi all
Since Type 2 diagnosis in February 2010, my HbA1c results have been 8.4 in March; then 7.0 in April; and the latest was 6.5 in May. I had my first Annual Review last Friday and my Diabetic Nurse was really pleased with my progress. These past few months I have adjusted my diet [eating more healthily and cutting out sugar], have lost 2 stone and have been exercising each day. 🙂
I was put on Glycazide [think that's how it's written] early April, but i then suffered an unconscious fall [my very first hypo] a few weeks later when walking outdoors and badly hurt my head on concrete [i ended up spending the evening in A&E!]. The DN immediately took me off the medication and i have been on diet and exercise control ever since.
However, i suffered a big setback last weekend because i suffered another unconscious fall onto concerete again when walking outdoors. I can't understand why it happended because my GP and DN both said i would not suffer another hypo because i was no longer on medication. I hurt my head and ended up in A&E again [my BS wasn't low when checked]. My GP has now referred me to a Neurologist for some checks [i have an appt in early August]. This latest incident has got me really worried to be honest.
It had been going so well [with reducing blood sugar levels] but these two unconscious falls have really knocked my confidence and i'm afraid of going out for walks / doing any form of exercise at the moment. But i'm determined to regain my confidence and be positive again and [slowly but surely] get back into exercising each day.

I also had a few hypo episodes when on gliclazide and also felt really rotten a few times when out for my walks (and a few times wondered whether I could get back home!).
Part of this was down to my body getting used to the lower blood glucose levels as well, but part of it was also down to me not understanding how to properly control my blood glucose levels (it was all very new to me).
Hopefully, this is what has happened to you too and if so, I can say that you will get through it and you'll feel much better for the change of diet and loss of weight (I certainly do). You seem to be doing the right thing though. Take things slowly and surely.
One thing that I still find useful is to have a pack of glucose tablets with me whenever I'm on my walk. If I feel funny (even if it's just hunger), I suck a couple slowly. This usually gets me on an even keel again (probably as much a psychological fix as physical!).
I now rattle around my walks with gay abandon (sort of)!

hey well done on reducing the bs that is really good progress ! as for the falls have you dicussed with DSN or gp probably stating the obvious sorry ....have you tried any walking aids that maybe will give you some confidence when out and about ?

And yes, i have discussed my falls with my GP; he said the first fall was because my BS was too low [2.7 when checked in the ambulance] and he said in large part the fall was brought on by taking glyclazide; but with the second unconscious fall i wasn't taking any medication and my BS level when checked in A&E was 7.9 [not low] but then again i had taken 4 glucoze tablets very shortly before the fall [when i knew something was seriously wrong]. And so my GP has now referred me to a Neurologist for checks [i have an appt early Aug] and that's got me worried. But i'm trying to remain positive and have done some exercise at home these past 2 days. i can walk unaided [i'm only 42 and in good health otherwise], but thanks for the concern and also the suggestions - much appreciated.

Hi Sat I am new to but I have had type 2 diabetes for nearly 7 years. Hope you are managing yours ok. Mine is up and down sometimes but hey we have to make the best of things🙂
