Thought it was about time I registered. Been browsing on and off for some years, but have been a more intensive user over in the other system!

Anyway, I have been T1 for 8 years, diagnosed just before my 60th, and started injecting on my 60th birthday! Not one I'll forget.

Anyway, I'm a Libre user, been using it for nearly 3 years (or is if nearly 4?). Try to lowcarb, stick to about 100gm per day. Inject FIASP and Lantus.

I guess you might find out more as we go.

Cheers
Barry

Hi Barry and welcome from me too. I got diagnosed the day after my birthday but had already figured out what the problem was and cut back on the carbs as soon as I was symptomatic therefore no birthday treats for me. That said, I didn't start on insulin until 6 weeks after that during which time I learned to eat very low carb and have stuck with it.
I will be going back onto Fiasp when my NR runs out in a couple of months time. I have split dose Levemir as my basal which really suits me as I need so much less insulin at night. How do you manage with the Lantus? Have you ever tried another basal insulin?

I have taken Lantus pretty much all the time except for s brief spell when I got all environmental and didn't like the plastic pen being disposed of every month. So I went onto Levimir using the same pens as my FIASP. But I had a bad couple of weeks of poor control and switched back. Nothing to do with the insulin, just one of those things, but my over reaction was to remove any changes.

Do you double dose on yours?

Yes, I currently take 16u Levemir in the morning and anywhere between 4 and 6 at night depending upon a variety of factors like my evening reading, if I had a lot of protein for dinner, when I ate (I am notoriously bad for eating very late but very low carb so not really a problem 😱 ) and how physically active I have been through the day and if I had a sneaky glass of red or two. Having the half unit pens makes a big difference for fine tuning both the evening Levemir and my NovoRapid doses and as you say the environmental impact is less which I prefer.

I am self funding the Libre at the moment which I absolutely love. It was sanctioned by my consultant for prescription back in Feb but there have been no courses due to pandemic and they won't prescribe without the course so I bit the bullet and blew some savings and birthday money for the past couple of months. Currently averaging 93% Time in Range this week and 87% over the past 60 days which I could certainly not achieve with finger pricks. Hoping to see a big improvement in my next HbA1c, whenever that may be!

Welcome to the forum @barrym from another late starter. I was 53.

I started on pens and used split Levemir along with Novorapid before switching to a pump.
The pump allowed me more flexibility as I could use much smaller individual doses and adjust my Basal to match what I need.

Like you I find the Libre is very useful.

I look forward to hearing more from you.

Blimey. I get those sort of figures for short bursts. Usually screwed up by an overnight hypo, fruit reacting unusually, or some inexplicable reason.

Not all bad though. HbA1c is usually mid 50s which whilst not being a brilliant measure, does indicate thrashing around at the right end of the scale.

Welcome to the forum, Barry. I used to use Lantus, and had a reusable pen with cartridges, (an Autopen, I think, from Owen Mumford, then I swapped to a Junior Star, which did half units) so it is possible to avoid the disposable pens with Lantus.(except in the USA, I think, where disposable pens are the only option)

That's very interesting. I'll do some digging and see what I can find out.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum from another later starter - I was 42.
