Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi 🙂

I recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 24 years old.

Was told I had type 2 early 2014 but progressively got worse over the past year, test results showed I have type 1. Really struggling to get my head around everything.

Glad to hear it.

Next week I will be learning to carb count and looking for as much support as possible. As everything is very over welming

Welcome to the forum Kimberly91 🙂

Welcome to the boards, Kimberly91.

Good to hear you are having carb counting training next week - that will help to measure / estimate carbohydrate content of various foods and help you work out how much insulin to use for various meals. However, don't be too hard on yourself, as none of us get it right everytime. The odd higher or lower than intended blood glucose level means you're trying, and aiming for a normal fun life.

If you want some reading regarding exercise with type 1 diabetes, try here: http://www.runsweet.com/StartingSports.html and click on the links from orange band below the brown tabs.

Remember to keep hold of your aims in life - in no particular order, relationships, work, leisure, sports, creative activities, travel etc.

Hiya! - welcome to the club no-one wanted to join!

I really think at the moment you should concentrate on just learning about your diabetes - it becomes far easier to control and deal with, once you understand it a bit. And easier and easier as you learn more.

A very good book for beginners (of any age despite the title!) - is 'Type 1 Diabetes in Children and Adolescents' by Ragnar Hanas.

There is also a famous tome called 'Using Insulin' by John Walsh which is good , yes - but it's just like a science textbook I'm afraid. Not very readable. A bit heavy going - whereas the Ragnar Hanas one is much more easy to grasp.

Anyway the way we learn about it other than things like formal carb counting training is - whenever we have a query we don't know the answer to - we ask! It might only be 'I wonder what happens if ...' or 'when ....' - but someone on here is almost bound to know the answer.

And no such thing as a stupid question - only the one you didn't ask!

Thank you, I will definitely look into getting that book.

I'm still adjusting to lower blood sugar levels as they were in the high 20's for a very long time. My body still seems to panic if they drop below 6.

I guess taking every day as it comes is the best outlook I can have, not going to lie it's very difficult sometimes and I find myself feeling very negative about it all.

Welcome Kimberly
I was diagnosed with Type 2 wrongly like you and spent 9 months going downhill. Only slowed inevitable hospital visit by eating very low carbs in an effort to get my bs in the teens rather than 20s. I remember very well my first few weeks on insulin and my body adjusting to it. It is tricky, but you will feel SO much better very soon. Take care and glad you found us 🙂

Hiya Kimberly and welcome.🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. 😱 It's only natural to feel overwhelmed at first - there's so much to take in! This forum has really helped me adjust to my new situation, and I've learned loads here too, as well as getting lots of support from people that understand...so stick around.🙂
