Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I've recently had a rare type of Stroke and with it I'm diabetic type 2 and anaemic ( already had 2 bags of iron) firstly they put me Glargine a fasting insulin, fab for sugars levels first thing but risen during the day, they have now put me on Humulin 6 units at night and 10 units at breakfast this morning they were high at 11.5. Is this normal, shud I expect them to go down during the day? Shud I give it time to work? I'm so scared to touch food.... help?

Welcome to the forum @tracy1971

Sorry to hear your diagnosis has left you feeling anxious :(

Which Humulin have you been given? There are a number of different ones that act in different ways. And insulin needs to be balanced with each individual‘s metabolism, and their food choices.

It’s not uncommon for people to be started on quite conservative insulin doses to begin with, but you certainly shouldn’t be scared to eat!

When are you next due a follow-up conversation with your nurse?

I'm due on the 8th Feb but I can ring at anytime. But this is my first reading since last night which was 12 n this morning at 11.5. The insulin is isophane insulin /Lilley and says nothing else on the box. Thank u.

All I've had is black berries n kiwi plus 100g skyr yoghurt nmy blood sugars are 15. 3 what's is happening

If the Humulin you’re taking is called Humulin i then it’s a basal/background/slow insulin. It’s not really supposed to deal with meals (there are faster insulins that can do that, if needed).

However, if you’ve just started Humulin i, it’s very possible they’ve started you on a low dose for safety and will gradually increase it as needed.

I hope you’re recovering from your stroke ok x
