Hi all
I was diagnosed during April when it was lockdown. I had a telephone consultation and advised on my tablets. Can I ask some questions here

Hello Dawn and welcome, you will find a lot of great people here to help you, just ask away. I would say you will get some responses in the morning from the people more involved than I, I just wanted to say hi as you had no responses yet

Thank you very much. I am just wondering is it normal to constantly feel sick, have pains in the tops of my legs and not be able to sleep.

In my experience anything is possible with this disease, what meds are you taking? And how is your control, for me being high can cause aches and pains especially in my legs.
I suspect the pains and sickness would be contributing to the sleep problem.
I would be a little worried if this all just happened. I’m sure you will get lots of advice in the next hours as people wake up

Hi Dawn and welcome from me too.

Can you tell us a bit more about how you came to be diagnosed ie were you suffering some symptoms or was it through a routine blood test. What tablets have you been given and do you know what your HbA1c reading was when you were diagnosed. This is the result of the blood test which identifies that you have diabetes and will be a number of 48 or more. That tells us a little bit about where on the diabetes scale you might be and it can vary quite significantly from 48 to well over 100. It also helps to know if you have much weight to lose and what if any dietary changes you have made so far.

The symptoms you are experiencing may be related to medication and/or diabetes but they could be something else. Knowing more information might help to indicate that but you should be speaking to your health care professionals about these troubling issues.

Hi Dawn,
Welcome to the forum and don’t be afraid to ask any questions as they’re all important.
There’sa vast wealth of knowledge and experience here so no matter what it is that’s on your mind the changes are someone here will be able to suggest something useful.

Hello @Dawn B

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis - it must have been a very difficult time to get diagnosed, with appointments and information so hard to come by during lockdown.

Please do feel free to ask away with any questions, or just to rant and moan with people who instinctively ‘get it’. Nothing will be considered ‘silly’ and no question is too obvious.

If you can let us know any medication you may have been prescribed, that will help our experienced and friendly members to share their experiences and make suggestions.

Do also try to book a phone appointment with your practice nurse to discuss the unpleasant symptoms you are experiencing.

Metformin made me feel sick, I had pains in my hips, knees and in many muscles. My memory was affected, so I am a bit hazy about some things but the aches and pains were dreadful. It did take some time to recover from the last of the effects, and I think my legs are still weaker than they were - but I used to run up mountains when younger.

Thank you all for your responses. I am on 1000mg of Metfirmin per day. I think it was at 83 but not had any follow ups since. I was told over the phone following 3 separate blood test. I’m also struggling with sleep and memory loss. Thank you again for your responses. I’m glad of the reassurance that the symptoms I’m experiencing at not in my mind.

Did they also give you statins for cholesterol along with the Metformin? I believe some of the statins can cause those side effects as well and it is quite common to prescribe statins as well when people are diagnosed with diabetes.
Just because other people have suffered similar side effects does not mean that it is OK to continue taking them. If these things are seriously affecting you then you need to discuss it with your GP or nurse and see if they can suggest an alternative. Not sleeping well and being in pain can both increase your Blood Glucose (BG) levels which is not good for your diabetes management so important to discuss with your health care professionals.
Taking the Metformin in the middle of a meal and usually something reasonable substantial (not just a snack) is best to reduce the risk of gastric upset.

You really do need to discuss with your Doctor or Nurse!

There are different types of metformin and it’s pretty routine for the gp to switch medication if it doesn’t agree with you but you have to be proactive and tell them what’s happening. You don’t need to wait to be called in by the diabetes nurse either. Contact the surgery, book an appointment with the gp and tell them how the meds are making you feel.
Also write down any questions you want addressed and just read them off to the doctor, they really won’t mind.
