Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 10 years ago and reversed it with weight loss. Since then my HBAC1 results have always been in the early 40's.

For the past 6 months I have had swelling of my upper stomach. Then for the past 3 weeks I have had diarreah, fever, headaches, light-headedness and dehydration. I have been to A&E twice and had IV fluids and it was there that they pricked my finger and found I had a blood sugar of 19 when I have barely been eating.

So my GP ordered a HBAC1 and they have just called to say that it was 85 (200% of what it is normally) and that they will repeat it next week.

Is this normal for it to rise so drastically? I had been eating the healthiest I have ever eaten for the past 6 months with lots of fruit and veg. The only thing is that I am disabled so I can't exercise or move much.

My gut feeling (excuse the pun!) is that it could be a problem with a digestive organ as I have had 2 episodes in the past year where I have vomited bile and then felt nauseous and been only able to eat plain toast for weeks? I thought it might be the pancreas or gall Bladder but I had CT and ultrasound scans in A&E last week and both were fine?

I'm so confused and just wondered if anyone else has had an increase from 44 to 85?

Hi Sunny, this sounds like something you really need to speak to your doctor about. Hope you get it sorted 🙂

If you were eating toast, at something silly carbs per slice, then that will push up the blood glucose, as will tropical high fructose fruits and starchy veges.
The last few weeks sound dreadful - I do hope your doctor can advise well.

Hi and welcome.
I am so sorry that you have had such nasty bouts of illness and it must be very worrying not knowing the cause.
As regards your high BG readings, it is possible that you have become more sensitive to carbohydrates and your previous diet is no longer enough to control it. As @Drummer says, toast (bread) and fruit are both high carb foods. I appreciate that when you are ill some plain toast can be the easiest thing to get down which will keep your body ticking over but you may need to experiment with other options.
It would be difficult for any of us to say whether your high HbA1c is related to the illness and/or the abdominal swelling but I suspect you are right that it is associated with the liver/pancreas/gall bladder.
A blood glucose meter will enable you to find out what is going on with your BG as regards the food that you are eating and help you to find alternatives to the carbs which are spiking your blood. GPs do not tend to provide them to Type 2 patients unless they are on insulin, but they can be bought quite cheaply (approx £15) if your GP will not provide one. The purchase of test strips becomes the greater financial burden and it therefore makes sense to buy the meter with the cheapest test strips. For this reason the SD Codefree Blood Glucose Meter is recommended on this forum as the strips are £8 for a pot of 50.
Has your GP offered any medication to help bring your BG down? If you are prescribed Metformin, do make sure to take it mid meal with a substantial amount of food as it has a reputation for causing digestive upset and with your current problems, you don't need things to get worse.
Good luck and I hope you are able to get your BG back under control. Please let us know how you get on.
