At risk of diabetes
I have recently been told I am pre diabetic with hba1c 44. It is all very new to me still, and I am hoping to pick up some tips on how to hopefully reverse it. I definitely need to diet and definitely need to exercise more . I have an under active thyroid and low motivation, shoot me now lol I need a mega boot HELP

Hi and welcome to the forum, a good choice in coming here. 🙂

You are only pre diabetic, so you do not need to worry that much hopefully, just some small changes could get you back into a normal range quite easily. You need to reduce the carbohydrates you eat, not just the sugars. You already have some idea of what is ahead so just relax and try to not worry. Any specific questions and I am sure someone will answer them. 🙂

I have been taking Thyroxine for many years now, and when being encouraged to eat carbs because they are so healthy I struggled with my weight, and a lot more.
Forget the idea of losing weight and exercising to feel better, lowering blood glucose levels will most likely make you feel so much better that you will want to go for walks and take exercise, and with your metabolism firing on all cylinders again weightloss is a lot easier.

Thank you I have an appointment with the diabetic nurse and I have been asked to take a urine sample do you know why , I didn’t think to ask at the time

Welcome to the forum @Dabbers

We’ve had quite a few members arrive with prediabetes or borderline results over the years, several of who have been able to turn things around with some dietary tweaks and changes. Mostly lowering the portion sizes of carbohydrates and often using a BG meter to look at the effect of different foods on blood glucose levels. It’s a very individual thing, and while general advice can be helpful, without checking your own individual responses it’s tricky to know whether you are ruling out perfectly good choices, or whether supposedly ‘safe’ foods actually cause you big BG upheaval.

Tricky to know for sure - there are a bunch of things they check in urine samples. I’m always asked to provide one at annual review.

Hello and welcome to the forum. 🙂 You've got a chance to get a handle on it now. I was prediabetic too but not for long! Blanked it and carried on same ol' same ol' with thyroid probs same as you. I don't think there's anything you can do about the thyroid but you could reverse the other hopefully.

When blood glucose reaches a certain level the kidneys will try and get rid of it through your urine. Over time this can damage them, so your DN will always check your urine.

Just to clarify, the main urine test is for protein (albumin) since presence of that can be a sign of kidney damage. (Can also be a sign that you've got an infection or something, so a one-off positive test doesn't mean anything.)

Thank you all the appointment isn’t until 11th Nov so at least it’s nothing urgent .
