help for newbie sorry about all this

Pasta, digestives and cornflakes would raise my sugars a lot. Perhaps get a good carb counting book like Carbs and Cals or check the internet for carbs in things you eat. Also check packaging when shopping. It's a pain at first but you soon get to learn what you can eat without the big rises. I personally avoid bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and biscuits and cakes. It's good you test and this way you can see how things affect you and what to avoid. Oh and i think protein bars are very high carb in some cases so i avoid but may work for you best to test after and see.
Good luck.

Everyone is different but i think below 130 carbs a day is considered low carb. People do a lot less and some people have virtually none. I myself try to keep to 70-100. Perhaps 25 average for meals and a few extras for the odd snack. When you carb books arrive you will have a better idea. It does get easier and you can eat some nice things. Don't be horrified yet you will find a way just takes practice. I was scared at first but now finding things much better and can eat lots of nice things still, just not the carby things i used to eat. Weight has fallen off and i feel better than i have in years and many on this site will tell you the diagnoses has actually made them change their lives for the better. Loads of good ideas and advice on this site too.

Nature Valley protein bars (nut based ) are in the region of 10-12g carb per bar but I do cut them in 4 pieces and only have 1 at a time as I find them quite sweet. I believe Aldi also do a low carb protein bar.

Best just see what your monitor says after eating it, maybe fine for you as we all react differently to different foods. Like @Leadinglights mentions there are lower carb ones around so best check carb content on the side of the packaging.

Ideally, you want your before eating BG result and your c.2 hours post first mouthful reading, to be no more than 3.0 different.

So if your pre meal result is 10.0 and the post meal is more than 13 - the content of the meal was too much for your body to cope with. How long does it stay at 13?

However - because you need to stabilise your BG throughout the day and night, what you are aiming for is a pre meal reading between 4 and 7 all day every day.

hi thank you so before tea some days say 10.5 6pm then tea bedtime readings always high so all my meals no good is that right none of my pre meal are low . i can't get it down at all thank you

Hello,

Sorry, to hear that you now have Type 2.it was not so long ago that I having big reads too especially after lunch time. Unfortunately high BG may not feel painful at the time, but they are very dangerous medium to long term! In my case my eyes are now suffering.

I hope you don't mind if you give you the following advice, apologies if I am repeating as it already may have been mentioned.

1. I am not sure whether your medicine is correct, maybe see your GP or Diabetic Nurse.

2. Keep to some of the food you enjoy, initially, but cut back on the portion size, smaller plate etc.

3. Cutting back on some of the carbs - it is hard and it is comfort food, but you need to work out about high and low carbs, and going on a low carb diet is not all that bad as you can eat protein and some fats, which will keep you full too and stop the cravings (that's what carbs did to me).

4. Don't be afraid to try some new foods, but again test your BG before and 2 hours after and seeing if the difference is less than 2.0.

My example today, I love kebabs with Naan Bread and fries, today I went to my local Indian takeway and bought a big kobeda kebab (made from lamb mince meat) and asked for salad. Okay no naan and no fries, but the kebab was yummy and my BG spiked by 1.6, 2 hours after eating -result!

5. For snacks, try walnuts or almonds, or a small amount of cheese.

We are all different and that means some things may work better for and some things may not, but take it one step at a time, stress can also affect you BG as well as a lack of sleep.

Good luck.

I cannot praise the Carbs and Calorie counter book enough, I bought it upon reading this forum it is a real eye opener.
I have been low carb for about 2 months now and at last its getting easier and the cravings have gone.
this forum has been an enormous help and I thank everyone of you

In some senses at the beginning the actual numbers themselves are less important than the before-after differences. I can completely understand you wanting to get your BGs down speedily, but actually it’s much easier on the body, and the fine blood vessels, to reduce your averages gently over a longer period.

If you make some tweaks to reduce the ‘meal rises’ to around 3ish by reducing carb portion sizes then your before meal levels will begin to gradually come down.

Maybe check out the ‘what did you eat yesterday’ thread for some alternative meal ideas

hi to day is better i have gone on juice plus and vitamins
morning shake low car bar mid morning cuppa tea reading before lunch 10.5
such scramble eggs and bacon i sausage not bread
will do reading before tea

Hi @dees . If you're taking readings to see how your body reacts to different meals you should take a reading before a meal and approximately 2 hours after. This will tell you how well your body has coped with that meal. At this stage you're looking for a rise no more than 3 and work towards a rise of 2 or less. Taking readings only before meals isn't that helpful to you.
