Hi my name is Donna. I have joined as I am having problems with getting my blood sugars down and I could do with some help please

Hi Donna, welcome to the forum. How long have you had diabetes? Are you on medication, if so, how are you getting on with it?
What are your sugar levels like, are you getting any support from your GP/nurse?
Sarah

Hi Donna and welcome from me too.

The more information you can give us about your diabetes and how you manage it... medication, diet, exercise and what sort of Blood Glucose (BG) readings you are getting... the better placed we are to make suitable suggestions to help you.

As Windy says a bit more information will help people give you appropriate suggestions as the things people need to do depends on their situation.

Hi I have had diabetes about 8yrs I take metformin gliclizide and apagaflozin. I'm getting on ok with it. Waiting for the dietitian to get in touch again as when she sent appointment I was working

My reading is mostly over 11. I am on the go all the time at work as I work in an independent living place as a carer. I've cut my meal size down and cut my carbs down alot . I also have high blood pressure

It is useful to know what medication you are taking but what is equally as important is your lifestyle, diet and exercise.
A successful way of getting blood glucose down is to follow a low carbohydrate dietary regime. I assume that as you are taking gliclazide you have a blood glucose monitor so you can test at home.
What sort of levels are you getting from your testing.

Hi @Donnawatson and welcome to the forum.
What methods have you tried ?
Many of us find that it makes a huge difference if we cut down on all things which increase Blood Glucose (i.e. all carbohydrates so starches as well as sugars).
That's all I did (no medicine, no additional exercise, no calorie reduction) in order to put my Type 2 diabetes into remission.

Minimum 11

Would you like to post a few examples of the meals you have to see if anybody can spot any particular foods which may be the issue.

How much have you reduced carbs? Low Carb is defined as less than 130gms of carbs per day.
But those of us with BG monitors often find that we personally (we are all different) may need to reduce carbs more than that. In my case it was to between 20gms per day and 40gms per day.. Carbohydrates start to turn into glucose as soon as you put them in your mouth and they are also the only non-essential macro nutrient (meaning that you don't need to eat them at all in order to stay alive, and some people don't).

I have started to eat more protein
What about the carbs?

Is this a recent change in BG levels or has it been a gradual shift?
You mentioned high blood pressure, is that being treated?

More a gradual shift. I am on meds for my blood pressure. Sometimes my bs can go down to 9 or so but most of the time they are at a minimum level of 11 or 12

Have a look in the food forum as there is a thread What did you eat Yesterday and you will get an idea of what people have for meals in terms of carbs, protein and healthy fats.
At the same time as increasing protein you need to reduce carbs, the fact that you are on multiple medication and your blood glucose is still very high suggests you are still having too much carbohydrate.
What would a typical breakfast and dinner be for you.

Hi Donna. I wrote this to help you begin: Getting Started. I know you will have lots of questions after you read that and the pages it links to. Come back and ask them all.

Hi Donnawatson, welcome to the forum.

It's good to hear that you've begun changing your diet as it seems as though that will help get your numbers down.

It might be worth keeping note of what you eat in a week and then you can see what improvements can be made.

As well as the food forum, do have a look at our info page for some advice https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy-food/eating-with-diabetes/i-have-type-2-diabetes.
Where can I find this food forum you speak of?
