Hi, almost 2 week into being told I am type two and its all been a crazy time but slowly settling down and im getting to grips with all the info that has been given to me.

Anyway, just wanted to say hello

Hi @Maca44 from a fellow type 2, and welcome to the forum 🙂

Are you on any medication or simply managing it by diet? I'm on metformin which doesn't agree with a lot of people, but I was fine after the first couple of weeks.

Any questions you have, just fire away. There will always be someone here who will be able to help.

Thank you for a warm welcome it's most welcome as I feel a little let down by the surgery, they just gave me loads of meds the nurse who I had an appointment with said she has never seen such a high blood reading after results came back so came out of Dr's feeling c**p.

So pleased I came here so I can read your posts it has calmed me down. Yes Vonny I am on

Metformin 500mg with an increase to 2 tabs twice a day over a month.
Sitagliptin 100mg once aday
Also they put me on cholesterol tablets.

Got to be thankful for the help but I'm getting Jelly legs before meals so am now worried about going back to work tomorrow as I drive delivering meds to care homes from 3pm to 7pm ish so worried I'm to feel ill while driving and having a late evening meal.

Metformin does take a little while to get into your system @Maca44, I'm sure you'll be feeling better soon. Late evening meals aren't a problem for me...we eat about 8pm and it doesn't seem to affect my bloods, but I have to admit I don't know what Sitagliptin is like and hope someone with more knowledge can help.

Are you cutting down/out your carbs? I found once I'd been a few days with v few carbs I stopped feeling hungry and wobbly before meals. However, we are all different as you'll find on this forum. One thing is for sure, there's no such things as a "standard" diabetic. You may benefit from monitoring your blood glucose before a meal and again 2 hours after. As as type 2 you probably don't qualify for a free one on the NHS, but they are reasonably priced. I bought the SD Gluco Navii because the testing strips are relatively cheap.

As for being the highest reading your nurse has ever seen, there are lots of people here who were into 3 figures and have now cut that right back so don't panic!

Hope you feel ok working tomorrow.

I'm writing to wish you a warm welcome as I was a couple of days ago. Such a friendly and helpful group of people here. Bless them!!

It will be two week this Tuesday since being told and I changed my diet overnight and have eaten well with lots of veg and no spuds, replaced bread with wholemeal flat bread and abit of honey in coffee no sugar just gotta have 2 coffees aday.
It's early days so will wait for everything to settle but my readings are OK as far as I can see.

I am afraid bread is bread, is it will still have carbs, and honey is no better than a spoon of sugar, it is just a different type of sugar.

Welcome to the forum @Maca44

Sounds like you have made a great start on managing your BG levels, and your surgery seems very pleased with your progress.

As @Vonny says, it can be really helpful to get hold of a BG monitor so that you can check how your body is responding to different foods, eg how your metabolism is dealing with the wholemeal bread, and whether that is working well for you - everyone's different and a BG meter provides information specific to you rather than what happens on average to other people.

Many members here have found Alan S’s Test, Review, Adjust a very helpful and practical approach.

Good luck and let us know how you get on 🙂

Yes the GP gave me a Nexus RX and put the test strips on repeat prescription so I have been testing am before breakfast 2hrs after and the same with evening meals just for now to keep track as it's early days.

Welcome to the forum Maca, from a fellow T2 who'll be six years in on Thursday.
I'd suggest keeping a food diary, along with a record of your levels. Hopefully, after a couple of weeks you'll start to see a pattern.

Hi, I keep a food diary called my fitnesspal so that gives me a daily count of carbs/protein etc so just getting to grips with the carb intake bit.
