Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hi I'm offfay
I was diagnosed with type 2 about 10 years ago
from a routine test (no symptoms) needless to say i was flabbergasted
because I am very fit not overweight don't drink or smoke
however I did enjoy lots of citrus fruits muesli and soft drinks like apple and cranberry Juice and I loved whole meal bread Yeah I know I got suckered in by those (NO ADDED SUGER ) signs on the cartons
It certainly made me look at my food options differently
I have managed to slow the progress of the disease with complete change of
my diet ( no rice or spuds ) but my metformin has slowly increased to 3 tablets
you know what I think , they are continually telling people not smoke drink and
keep their weight down and exercise, its all a big con from my viewpoint

Hi Offfay, welcome to the forum. Do I take it you have, or care for someone who has diabetes? Why not tell a little about yourself?

Hi Offfay, welcome to the forum 🙂 There can be all sorts of reasons why people get diagnosed with diabetes - for some it may be due to a family history and a strong genetic link rather than anything you might have contributed to through your diet - around 20% of people are not overweight when diagnosed. If you consider that there are around 3 million people in the UK with Type 2 then that means over half a million of them were similar to you i.e. not overweight and otherwise fit and healthy - it's a common myth that you only bring on diabetes yourself because of poor diet and lifestyle choices. Not smoking and not drinking is good for your health whether you have diabetes or not, so hopefully this has helped you steer clear of other potential illnesses 🙂

Welcome to the forum, OFFFAY. Sadly, being fit and normal weight is no guarantee of not getting diabetes, as many of us diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in adulthood know all too well.
However, eating well, moderate alcohol intake, keeping active, keeping weight in normal limits etc are good for so many health reasons - and mostly it's fun to do those things. I've never wanted to smoke - and know that freed up money that I could spend on travelling etc.

Hi Offay, welcome to the forum....

As has been mentioned, there is a significant genetic predisposition, though a little overweight I have/had at least 2 family members with D (or pre-D) & despite living an active lifestyle I developed T2, IMHO the "experts" have been telling us to consume too many carbs for many years now & though they don't admit it, have contributed significantly to the T2 pandemic.

Looking back to my childhood, pretty much all our meals (apart from breakfast) were made from scratch using fresh ingredients, a much better way of living...

Welcome Offfay. It's frustrating when you're diagnosed and already leading a healthy lifestyle. It's harder to know how to prove things. But sounds like you're doing all you can by tweeking your diet. Hopefully that will keep you well.
