Has anyone got any advice or recommendations on travel insurance for diabetics?
Tony

Hi @Tonyant and welcome to the forum.

For our travel insurance we just go through our bank and pay an additional premium to cover my diabetes.
This worked out as the cheapest option for us. If your diabetes is well managed and you have not had any hospital admissions it costs less.

I have always used Staysure since diagnosis. Recommended by Martin Lewis for those with underlying health conditions and relatively inexpensive; I think this year the family cover was about £80 for the year. I did it through Topcashback too, so around £60ish in total. Before diagnosis I used to use Virgin and it was very cheap at about £25 annual cover!, but to cover my health needs now (diabetes, nut intolerance, asthma) they were quoting around £250.

It is also worth looking at single cover for yourself and a separate one for any dependents/ family as that can work out cheaper overall too.

We have worldwide annual cover with our Nationwide FlexPlus account. I pay an additional premium to cover the diabetes, atrial fibrillation and osteoarthritis. They currently won’t do medical cover for my husband as he’s just 2 years past treatment for laryngeal cancer, but he has been covered in the past. The total cost to us is less than the likes of Staysure, Allclear, Saga etc wanted for 1 week in Spain!

I'd endorse the Nationwide FlexPlus advice. We have that and they do cover hubby who had a prostatectomy in 2016 for cancer.

If you go to one of the comparison sites, you can fill in the 'pre-existing health condition' section, so you only get quotes from companies that will cover your diabetes. I’ve found in the past that it doesn’t always mean an increased premium.
But do make sure you’re covered for whatever you want to do on holiday. I found a good quote recently, but when I looked at the small print I wouldn't be covered for walking or hiking above 2000m altitude. As I was going to a high resort in the Dolomites, I had to find another company that covered me. I used Allclear, in the end, which also had full Covid cover.

Are the previous respondents to this question Type1 or Type2. I am Type2 under control with medication. Do I need to declare this to my travel insurer ? (travel insurance is an add on to my bank account)

Type 1, but yes, you will need to declare any condition you have to your insurer. They may refuse to pay out otherwise, even if your claim isn't related to diabetes. They won't necessarily charge you to cover it, but you must declare it.

Definitely.
I was type 2, now reversed. I declare this, and the option is to pay the extra premium as a type 2, or not be covered for type 2 complications.
This can include heart, circulatory issues etc, so I just pay the premium to avoid arguments at the hospital for it if it was ever needed for whatever reason.
