Relationship to Diabetes
Parent of person with diabetes
my son was diagnosed in November 2020 at 14yo. As he showed Covid antibodies in May 2020, we guessed he got asymptomatic Covid in March just before schools closed for the first lockdown. Doctors in E&A said they see increase in kids diagnosed with T1D after Covid. Son is cool, managing it pretty well, I fund Libra, Dexcom works only on the right arm, constantly screaming Hypos when on the left and Hypers when on the stomach. No-one can explain why..

Hi and welcome from me too.

Sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis but it sounds like you have all got your heads around it pretty well so far. There definitely seems to be a strange link between Covid and diabetes which is probably going to take a lot of years to unravel.

Very odd that the Dexcom is giving erratic coverage on your son's body but at least Libre is cheaper if you are self funding and whilst not generally as well regarded as Dexcom, it is certainly a fantastic bit of kit. I love my Libre and it has enabled me to improve my diabetes management enormously and just understand how my body works so much better than just a few finger pricks each day. Have you enquired about getting Libre on prescription?

Anyway, hope you find the forum as helpful as I have. There is lots of information from members everyday experience with diabetes which makes it a far broader base of practical knowledge than most health care professionals could ever hope to gain so shout up if you need help with anything. Diabetes is all about figuring out how your (son's) body responds and there can be huge variation between individuals, so trial and improvement is the way forward.

Hi and welcome. It’s very odd that the dexcom is doing that but goes to show how no one technology suits everyone. Will his team not put in for funding for him to have a Libre? Our paediatric team will do their best to make the criteria fit for funding.
