I’ve just found out i have diabetes type 2 I’m on meds but have blurred vision ? Did anyone have this and how long before you eyes was ok again …. It’s really freaking me out

Hi @GKC, welcome to the forum and sorry to hear about your diabetes and blurred vision. It's your eyes getting used to the lower level of glucose in your blood since you started your medications. There's a previous thread here which might help. It should resolve itself, but you should book to see an optician if you're worried about it, as they can check all is well. Tell them you're diabetic when you book the appointment, so they can add that to your records.

I just seen the post looks like other people have the same problem . thank you for your advice

I was not prescribed medication as my HbA1C was only 50mmol/mol and the GP was happy for me to go with diet only so I reduced my carb intake to 70g per day. The change to my near vision probably happened after about a month and unfortunately took several months to return to normal. Most people find it returns to normal more quickly than that.
It was only by reading on here that I knew that was the issue. I just put up with it as the advice was not to rush out to get new glasses and indeed an optician should not recommend it immediately.
I have since seen that to reduce carbs more slowly would have been wiser so by a third for a couple of weeks, then another third until you get to where you want or need to be.

@GKC - the change to eyesight was why I had to take 6-ish weeks off work when diagnosed - obv I didn't know it would be that long, but my GP surgery had no prob whatever keep issuing me sick notes. (When you're employed in an office as a clerk, if your eyes can't focus properly to read or write - you won't be of much use!)

Hi and welcome @GKC

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis and blurred vision. It is a common symptom of diabetes and although it is alarming it will settle down as your blood sugar decreases and stabilises in to a normal range with the medication and any changes to diet/excercise etc you make.

This is from the Diabetes UK site listing common symptoms including blurred eyesight

Common diabetes symptoms

  • Going to the toilet a lot, especially at night.
  • Being really thirsty.
  • Feeling more tired than usual.
  • Losing weight without trying to.
  • Genital itching or thrush.
  • Cuts and wounds take longer to heal.
  • Blurred eyesight
  • Increased hunger.
These symptoms can affect anyone - adult or child.

Prior to diagnosis your blood glucose will have been raised and that affects every system in the body as it circulates including the fluid in the lenses of the eyes. The lenses swell due to changes in osmotic pressure and the normal focus of the eyes alters, vision becomes blurred but as glucose levels fall and settle so your focus should return to normal. Don't pay for any new glasses if you wear them, wait a few months and meantime use less expensive reader specs if you are having trouble reading etc.

Hi GKC, welcome to the forum.

Blurry eyesight was the first symptom I had and I was scared out of my wits! For me, it lasted about 8 weeks until things returned to normal.

Once my sugar levels stabilised, so did my eyesight. In the mean time, I got some glasses but only used them when I absolutely needed them like reading on using the computer.

Hopefully, it will be quicker for you but it's very common so try not to worry too much.
