Relationship to Diabetes

I was diagnosed with polymyalga last year I was put on steroids and still on them the steroids led me to become diabetic to my horror only just coming to terms with it iv put on so much weight due to the steroids I was put on metmorfin but they didn’t suit me now on linagliptin my problem at the moment I cannot get into a proper diet I feel desperate at the moment
 
Welcome @Jewan So sorry that you’re feeling desperate. What are you finding difficult about your diet? Ask anything you want - nothing is too trivial or ‘silly’.
 
Sorry to hear that your steroid treatment has left you with diabetes, and additional weight :(

Are you still taking the steroids or has that finished now?

Hopefully by comparing notes, experiences and strategies with others here you’ll get some ideas and options of ways of eating that might suit you.

We have some people who have great success by moderating and reducing their total carbohydrate intake (not just ‘of which sugars’). While others find a calorie controlled approach works better for them.

What matters most is finding an approach that works for you 🙂
 
Hi thanks for replying yes I’m still on the steroids and will be for another 12 months they have been decreased but if I have a flare up then it all starts again increase them then decrease I get confused with some foods on some sites they say don’t eat this another site says it’s ok to eat that I think I need to buy a book as there doesn’t seem to be much help with the Gp

Hi Inka thank you it’s knowing what food I can eat iv googled some foods but I’m not a fruit or veg person so that makes so hard for me my veg consists of peas and runner beans I know I can eat eggs and baked beans I just like basic food (boring) lol I realy need to look at completely different food which I know I won’t like sorry to moan I think to be honest I’m just getting my head round to the diabetes thing it realy upset me

Carbs and Cals book or app is good for giving the carb values with pictures of portion sizes for a whole range of foods but also you need to get used to looking at food packet or google food x for the TOTAL carbs so you can make better food choices. There can be a big difference between makes for what appears to be the same food item.
In order to reduce blood glucose levels then it is the carbohydrates in your diet you need to cut down on, not just sugar as many people think.
There are many approaches, low calorie, which can be shakes based or low carb so it it a matter of finding what suits you and is something you can enjoy and can sustain.

@Jewan You mentioned eggs and baked beans but not meat and fish - are you vegetarian? Eggs and cheese and tofu are good. If you eat fish and/or meat, that’s all zero carbs so you can have those. You don’t have to cut out all carbs, just reduce them.

If you’re worried about missing desserts and baked items, there are low carb recipes for cake, etc. There are also simple things like sugar-free jelly that make good desserts.

Runner beans (my favourite!) and peas are both great veg, and if you could include some green leafy veg that would be great. Don’t think about over-boiled cabbage, think about stir-fries, soups, baked kale, etc, etc. You don’t have to totally change your diet, but you could perhaps try to add in something new every week. That would be beneficial - for your diabetes and for your overall health.
 
Thank you Inka I think I’m looking to deep into it when I was first told I had diabetes I didn’t want to know I didn’t want it sounds stupid I know but iv come to terms with it now it’s nice to be able to talk about it thank you
 
Hi Inka I forgot to say I’m not vegetarian that’s what bothered me I didn’t think you could eat meat I thought I had to give everything up up but as you say just reduce them thank you x

Meat and fish are foods you most certainly can eat as they are virtually zero carbohydrate, whatever gave yo the idea you couldn't eat meat.

As said above, meat has no carbs so in theory you could eat as much as you wanted. In practice, it’s best to choose decent quality and eat well but not in excess. There’s nothing stopping you having a meaty meal. What you will have to do though is watch the carbs that you might usually accompany your meat with. It’s those carbs which will affect your blood sugar.

Probably because those are lower fat, but I would think you could have other meats too unless your doctor has told you not to. Eg buying a smaller amount of good quality beef is better than buying an enormous load of cheap mince.
 
I love all meat no my doctor hasn’t said I can’t eat meat I just assumed with what I heard other people said that I couldn’t but I will now in smaller portions I’m not a veg person all I like is peas and runner beans but that’s ok I eat plenty of them I’m feeling a lot better after talking to you so basically iv got to eat low carb food and smaller portions thank you xxx
