At risk of diabetes
Thanks for letting me join this forum
I’m 67 yrs old
My A1c was 48 I worked on that for 6 months got it down to 42 then carried on watching what I was doing for 6 months and it’s back up to 48 (obviously not watching closely enough)
So I’m back using the Libre2
My father had type 1 diabetes for 75yrs

Hi - sorry to hear that things have gone backwards, especially if you were you doing all the right things in terms of diet, being more active etc. Can you tell us a little more about how you were managing things?

Yes I play bowl 4 nights a week I was having 2 pints larger on average after.. so I stopped alcohol & tried to eat less sugar in food and low carb food. I thought that would be enough so I didn’t use Libre our test for a few months and I was back up to 48 same as before I’d change anything.
I haven’t had any readings under 5 for 5 days hadn’t been on Bike.. today I rode bike set of at 5.8 fasting no food.. spiked at 9.2 after 1hr still no food rode hard 20mph 800ft accent at cafe I was 7 had 2 toast pot of tea.. did another 15 miles got down to 4.5 had small piece of tiffin & pot of tea got back up to 7.. rode home 20 miles head wind was 4.5 at home felt tired.. time on bike was 3hrs 20mins
So no food for 12 hrs 1hr hard on bike gets me a spike of 9.2

My understanding is that vigorous exercise can raise BG whereas gentle exercise can lower it.

The rise in your morning BG up to 9 before food will be a combination of Dawn Phenomenon/Foot on the Floor syndrome causing your liver to release glucose to give you energy for the day ahead and then the exertive exercise on top of that causing your liver to pump out even more glucose for that burst of energy. Eating something before you exercise, will switch off this function of the liver to release glucose and trigger insulin release plus exercise makes us more sensitive to insulin, so your levels might then have come down doing it in that order. Something to experiment with anyway.

Above look ok to me any thoughts ?

Looks OK to me too and the exercise after food looks to be working better.

Do you mind me asking if you need to lose weight? I am just thinking that all those carbs may not be necessary and are not going to help you lose weight and it looks like you are basically exercising to manage your risk of diabetes at the moment. That is OK whilst you are able to exercise so much, but you may not always be in that position and perhaps losing weight or eating less carbs might be beneficial longer term. You don't necessarily need to eat carbs when your levels are in the 4s unless you are on insulin or insulin producing medication. More protein for breakfast will release glucose slower over about 2-6 hours, so might be something else to experiment with.

Note to self don’t eat everything in the fridge

You are certainly putting an impressive amount of effort into exercise. Well done!

I suspect that by constantly eating enough carbs to keep you burning glucose you never get into ketosis. A few slices of bread, cake, apple, flapjack, weetabix - so you never flip over into fat burning.
Vigorous exercise might be easier when fuelled by carbs, but I used to ride with a group of people who always left me behind for the first part of the ride but I gradually caught up as their energy faded, and sometimes, wickedly I would pull out a sprint finish and pass most of them as they had nothing left to call on. As a short plump female on a bike with 3 speeds and a shopping basket on the back, I had to try not to laugh too much....
That was some time ago now, and I'd hesitate to try riding around here as the drivers are manic, particularly since lockdown and I am 73 now. I joined 'Anonymous morris' and a longsword side for a bit of amusement.
Today I realised I'd not eaten anything and it was one o'clock, so I stuffed some corned beef into a lettuce leaf with some pickle, and poured some coffee, added double cream. I only need to eat twice a day but I'll have a smaller meal than usual tonight so I might remember to eat tomorrow morning.
You might like to experiment with a different way of eating and more endurance exercise to see how it changes your blood glucose perhaps in the weeks before a blood test.

Thanks yeah but on a cycling forum it wouldn’t look that way..
