Im a level 3 Special needs teaching assistant work in a school with complex and behavioral needs children and have been contacted by my school about returning back to work.

I'm very confused as I not sure if I can go back yet and should still be sheilding. Having only been diagnosed in the last 8 months we are still trying to get my sugars right. I also have high blood pressure.

Is there anywhere that I can get written details as to whether I can return?

Any help would be appreciated

Those of us with Diabetes are no more likely to catch Covid, so we were not included in the list of those that needed to shield, just strictly socially Diastanceing.

I know that all the reports in the media and the changing plans can be very confusing. The latest advice from Diabetes UK, which is regularly updated is here

I hope that that is of some help and clarifies the situation for you.

I can't offer any further advice on your work situation and I doubt anyone here would be able to give you specific advice on your particular circumstances, so it will likely be down to you to interpret the guidance linked above and have discussions with your employer/line manager/HR dept. to find a compromise.

We could however give you some help with getting your BG levels more under control and that will make you less at risk of complications if you were unlucky enough to contract the virus which, at the end of the day, we are all at risk of, even those people who are shielding.... there is no such thing as being completely safe or risk free, so you have to find the best compromise and work on the things you have control over.

Unfortunately NHS dietary advice is not always helpful for Type 2 diabetics, but we have many inspirational members here who have put their diabetes into remission by following a low carb way of eating and using a BG meter to help tailor their diet to their own body's intolerance to carbs. Some have done it without the need for medication and others have used medication initially but come off it when their levels came down into the normal range and some people continue to use medication but manage their levels very well. We would be delighted if you would like to stick around and perhaps we could help you revamp your diet/lifestyle and get things under better control.

Hi,

I don't know if this is any help to you regarding blood sugars, but a colleague of mine, type 2, spent ages trying to get his readings into a reasonable range, they kept increasing his insulin, but in the end the increases were having no effect. They started back to a minimal dose and worked back up again, which improved his b.g readings.

Did you receive a letter from the Government or message from your GP to advise you to shield?

As @SB2015 says, people with ‘regular’ diabetes and no additional complicating factors were never on the ‘extremely clinically vulnerable’ list (certain cancers, chemotherapy, dialysis, immunocompromised etc) that meant shielding/fully self-isolating. We were in the ‘at increased risk‘ group (like anyone over 70) who were advised to be extra careful with handwashing and social distancing, bit who could still work if their role could not be done from home.

Just wondering if you have any other factors which put you on the ‘shielding’ list?
