I’m 54, a full time carer, I have a sarcasm problem and usually open to advice . Has anyone tried the Newcastle diet and to good effect? I managed to lose 4 stone since diagnosis but I’ve stalled and blood glucose levels have increased so just considering giving it a try.

Hi Bumpywitch - It's going very well for me, I'm on Day 7 and lost 6kg.

Wow that’s brilliant, well done. May I ask which brand of shakes etc you use, I’ve bought a few to try but so far am quite keen on Puriton, have you tried that? they do pistachio flavour which is exciting...it’s early days though lol

Hi and welcome.

Many congratulations on your fantastic weight loss so far! Wow, 4st is impressive! I think most people hit a plateau and pushing through it can be helped by increasing activity levels if you are able. Instigating a daily brisk walk if is ideal and work on increasing the pace and distance if you can. Pushing yourself to get a bit breathless and sweaty, rather than just a stroll will help. I now "yomp" everywhere and I have a mile long hill incorporated into my walk which makes me dig deep into my lungs and causes a bit of muscle burn and that really helps both BG levels and body sculpting... great for thighs and buttocks!

It sounds like you have a BG meter for home testing since you mention that your levels are rising. Can you give us an idea of when you test and the sort of things you are currently eating... ie an average day's breakfast, lunch and evening meal and perhaps we can make suggestions for alternatives which might be more BG friendly.

Hi @Bumpywitch I find myself intrigued by your "sarcasm problem". Is that something that I've just not come across or a typo?
Or...have I just fallen into the trap and I'm going to get a really sarcastic answer!!? 😉
Excellent work on the weight loss.

@Peely66 not a typo, I’m told I’m too sarcastic for some, but its built in I’m afraid, so probably not going to change now. I’m sarcastic not cruel

thanks for the ideas, I’m limited physically so it’s tricky to increase the activity but I will should things improve. I do have a monitor at home, my last hba1c was 59, up from 53 but down from 79 and the diagnosis result was 117 so in the right direction mostly. My morning levels average around 8.3. I know the right things to eat just my brain gets in the way!

Hi. Pistachio sounds lovely. I picked from the "meal replacement" list in the Newcastle literature and Optifast as this was what was being prescribed by the NHS. I've tried the veg and leek and potato soups which are "Ok" - like a thick cup a soup. Not supposed to hotter than 50°C though (warm) so I prefer them cold. Chocolate and Coffee shakes are both nice. I may swap after the 4 boxes of 8 for another meal replacement brand on the list - Exante perhaps

Well it's the lowest form of wit but the highest form of intelligence according to Oscar Wilde.
I've had that said about me in the past. Sometimes I think a particular tone of voice can sound sarcastic and then everyone thinks everything you say is sarcastic.

Good luck. I really fancied some beers tonight. Fizzy water instead 🙂

I’m doing Exante, had my fist weigh in today and lost 10 lbs, so relieved. I didn’t think the Optifast had enough choice to keep me focused but it’s good to know they are ok. I’m mostly sticking to the shakes at the moment but the chicken and leek soup is ok. I got the book by Prof Taylor so will only use the ones they mentioned to be on the safe side too now. The Puriton was horrid by the way.

It worked for me.
Tesco shakes.
I lost about the same on a low fat diet initially, than realised it hadn't quite fixed my diabetes problem.
I did the Newcastle diet, that seems to mop up the remaining BG issues.

Hi @Bumpywitch - I ended up buying an Exante 4 week box as well. The amount of stuff in it was impressive. I decided I wasn't into the cereal bars, pancakes, porridge etc, so I shared them out with the family. It would probably have been better to just buy soups and shakes rather than the box. The range of flavours in the box is impressive (49 soups and shakes):
Butternut
3
Veg Soup
2
Red Thai
2
Porridge
2
Chicken & Leek
2
Cinnamon Swirl
3
Salted Caramel
3
Vanilla
3
Banana
3
Strawberry
4
Coconut
4
Chocolate
4
Berry Yoghurt
3
Cherries and Berriies
3
Cheese Cake
4
Caramel Latte
4

There is an 'Exante base flavour' which gets a bit much, so I like to include Optifast (Chocolate, Coffee, Veg and Leek and Potato soups) in the mix. I think I prefer Optifast, but I couldn't last 8 weeks on 4 flavours.
The Exante Cheese Cake really does taste like lemon cheese cake. Amazing

Oh, and now it's sunny I add ice cubes for a bit of novelty

A very good friend of mine used to say that to me frequently lol. I agree, I’m usually quite jokey and i think it can come across as sarcastic more often that it is.

I couldn’t last on 4 flavours either, so far I’ve been buying from the website but also from eBay so it keeps it varied. I’m slowly learning which ones I like plus have a decent set of vegetable combinations now for the 200 Cals.
I’m not keen on the bars either nor the soups. Haven’t tried
lemon cheesecake yet but I love lemon so fingers crossed I like it too.
