Type 2
Hi my name is daniel and just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, does anyone have any healthy food recipes for me to try out

Hi Daniel! How did you come to be diagnosed?

Hi Daniel and welcome

You are quite young to be diagnosed with Type 2 which I think is why @trophywench is enquiring about the circumstances of your diagnosis. Ie. Did you have sudden onset symptoms or was it through a routine blood test. Have you lost or gained weight recently? Are you normally fit and active etc.

The reason we ask is that it sometimes happens that a misinformed GP assumes someone is Type 2 based almost entirely on their age as they wrongly believe that Type 1 only exhibits in children. Many of us were misdiagnosed later in life due to this misinformation, so we are looking for information in the onset of your symptoms to give us an idea if you may be misdiagnosed as that will make a big difference to your treatment regime and dietary needs.
It is of course always important to eat as healthily as possible but people's tastes are all very different. Can you give us an idea of the foods you enjoy?

Hi thanks for the reply, last week I had the symptoms of a water infection and so was prescribed antibiotics from my local GP, after the weeks course pain was still there, rang back and did a urine sample and I had sugar in my sample, did a blood test that same day and got the diagnosis today

So - sorry to be nosey - do you have a lot of weight to lose, or what?

Hello Daniel and welcome to the forum. 🙂

According to my BMI I’m classed as overweight but that doesn’t really take in account my energy levels and exercise

Do you know what your HbA1c result was? This is the blood test result which is used to diagnose diabetes and will usually be a number of 48 or more but may be as high as 3 figures. Also, you didn't say if they gave you any medication and if so, what?

As you seem to be aware, carbs are the difficulty with diabetes as they all get broken down into glucose by the digestive system, not just sugar, so you would be looking to cut back on bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, pastry, breakfast cereals and even fruit as well as the obvious cakes and biscuits and sweets and of course added sugar.

How about a king prawn, mozzarella and spring onion omelette with a side salad and coleslaw. Feel free to have 2 or 3 eggs in your omelette. Quick and easy to cook and tasty.

So it sounds like you are quite fit and active then?
Have you noticed any weight loss recently?

Family and friends have noticed that over the last couple of months that I have lost some weight but I didn’t think anything of it

I think from what you have said, the chances are that you have been misdiagnosed. You need to be asking your GP why they think you are Type 2 because your symptoms suggest Type 1.
You also want to ask for your HbA1c result as that is your starting point in your journey with diabetes and you haven't mentioned what if any medication they have given you?

Well I have an appointment on Friday with a diabetic nurse and we will what medication I need to go

Mmmmm - would you please ask her if the GP and she are both 100% certain you really are Type 2? and if she says Yes, ask why? They need extra tests to prove this and unless you are really overweight and don't take very much exercise at all, it seems more than a bit unlikely at your age. (Don't let her fob you off with only children get Type 1 - because the majority of us were diagnosed as adults.)

Welcome to the forum @Dannyboy92

Hope you can get to the bottom of your diabetes diagnosis. It’s important to know which type you have (and there are many more than just 2!) because it has a big impact on the most appropriate treatment.

There is also a slow-onset form of T1 called LADA which can look a lot like T2 to begin with, and even appear to respond to T2 meds, but is ultimately an autoimmune version and the quicker a person goes onto insulin with it the better.

Unexplained weight loss, tiredness, thirst, and needing to wee more than usual are the classic symptoms of T1, and as others have said 50% of cases of T1 are diagnosed in adulthood.

Good luck, and let us know how your appointment goes today 🙂
