Hi I'm just trying to find out some advice I care for my elderly mother who has type 2 diabetes and has recently been put on inserlin but ever since then her blood surgery levels are really high some readings as high as 29.9 and I feel no one what's to help her, her blood sugar has stayed in the 20s now for over two weeks am I right in thinking it's very dangerous to have levels that high can any one advise me please

Who put her on the insulin and what instructions did they give her to change the dose

Welcome to the forum, this does not seem to be a good situation and some help should be available from whoever prescribed the insulin. What might be expected will depend on what her blood glucose levels were before starting the insulin as it if was even higher then they may be wanting to bring it down gradually.
People would be better able to make suggestions if you say what insulins she is taking and when and what her diet is like, does she have any other medical issues like an infection which could be pushing up her blood glucose.
How does she monitor her levels and does she have a means of checking for ketones, urine dip stick for example.
You could call 111 for advise to put your mind at rest but contacting her Diabetic nurse or GP or diabetic clinic would be a good idea asap.

Hi thank you for the advice the problem I'm having is she was taken in to hospital 4 weeks ago with an infection and the night they took her in her bloods were 27.4 she was in hospital for 1 week and the infection was treated and gone but her blood levels stayed really high the whole time she was in there I think the lowest was 19 i don't think she should of been discharged while her Blood sugar level was that high they sent her home on inserlin witch I'm now having to do as she has dementia as well and house bound since being home IV be in touch with the GP and diabetic team as I'm so worried that her bloods are not coming down at all above 20 every time I test them And i fill no one is helping me sort out why there staying so high she's not even eating very much and just sleeping all the time I just don't know how to help her when no one I ask seems to want to help she does not have dip to test for keton but I no her Habc1 was 98 witch I know is a high risk

The hospital put her on it and told me to do 10 units at night and because I went down the GP surgery yesterday to try get some advice and explain how worried I am I got a phone call early evening yesterday telling up her inserlin to 12 units and that has not really done any thing I check her bloods at 8pm this evening and they were still at 24.00 came down a bit cos they were 29.9

Do you have a contact number of the hospital ward where she was and the insulin prescribed as it would be a good idea to call them.
I wonder if the infection has returned, if it was a UTI they are notoriously hard to treat and get rid of.
When are you testing her blood glucose, I assume you have a finger prick monitor.
Was she diabetic before the hospital admission.

Yes I finger prick her and yes she was a diabetic type 2 before hospital but never had to use inserlin untill now they put her on it when in there thank you for replying to messages greatly appreciated I will make contact with the ward she was on not that they were much help when.she was in there but will try talking to.them again thanks again

Was she previously taking any medication for her diabetes or was she purely dietary managed and if so is she still taking that or did they take her off that.

That sounds totally normal to start on 10u then increase to 12 if not working well enough. If it is still high when that dose has had a few days to settle down call again but ask for instructions on how often you should increase the dose without having to call back each time.
