I think you are somehow misreading the labels and perhaps looking at sugar rather than total carbohydrate content because garlic bread and basmati rice will both be very significantly higher than those figures you have quoted. Rice is usually about 60% carbohydrate ie 60g per 100g and garlic bread about 45g per 100g. You need to find the box which contains the nutritional information, usually in tiny print on the side or back of the packet and you are looking for the total carbohydrates.
Appreciated - you are right, I have been looking at just what sugars, not the total carbs.

Those figures are likely to be the sugar content rather than the carb content. The media so often reports about sugar linked to Diabetes, but we need to focus on all carbohydrates. For our basamati rice there are 48g of carbs in 100 g of rice.

All the carbs we each eat are converted into glucose once inside us, whether they are sugar or not. The sugar is often converted more quickly, which is why that is more useful in treating hypos, but they will all top up our glucose in the end. well worth becoming familiar with the carb content of what you commonly eat. This will be essential once you are adjusting your insulin doses to match the carbs you choose to eat.
Many thanks.

I think you are looking at the sugar values per 100g, but you need to look at the carbs. Ignore the "of which sugars." You will find the carbs on the full nutritional info., usually on the back or side of the packet in tiny print. The traffic lights only show sugars, not carbs, so are pretty useless for us.
Appreciated.
I have an appointment shortly with the DB nurse, albeit a bit late, who will educate me further.
Is it appropriate to ask what sort of ratio of carbs I should be looking at generally?

The suggested amount of carbs per day is no more than 130g carbs not just sugar but spread between meals, any snacks and drinks. So the carbs you have need to be worth it for their added value in taste, enjoyment not just empty carbs.
If you still want breakfast cereals then look for Keto granola, Keto Hana is one with only 9g carbs per 100g, it is expensive but can be bought on line or Holland and Barrett. You could then have that with full fat Greek yoghurt and berries for breakfast.
The book or app Carbs and Cals is a useful resource as it gives the carb values for various portion sizes of a huge range of foods.

Hi Dave123 it's franthepotter. I can't help you with carb stuff etc and technicals as I'm very new to this but I can say from experience, if you change how you eat ... no sugars or carbs then very quickly you may find your taste buds find sweetness in cheese or skimmed milk. So it's worth doing. Takes a week I reckon.

Many thanks for the feedback - the app looks very helpful also.

Much appreciated franthepotter.
I'm a few days in currently and it's not easy - I haven't consumed so much water in all my life lol.
I really do have to find an enjoyable substitute but it's early days.
Strangely, cheese has never been a choice of mine and I'm alone in this at home unsurprisingly.
Although semi skimmed I do like.
I comfort myself in the knowledge it's a temporary period of cravings, and will pass like you say.
The journey has begun!

Unless you have to have low fat for other medical reasons there is no reason to choose low fat products, and those with normal fat can be more satisfying and help to stem hunger when you reduce the carbs, all of the cow's milks are the same in carbs so just have whatever you prefer.

Here's another crazy thing dave ... I'm able to see blood changes as have a temporary continuous monitor and when I get stressed my sugars also go up. I was reading on this site and sone other people also have this happen ... both for good stress and bad stress! But I'm always quite stressed!!! Anyway a friend passed me on some 10 min meditations that I listen too whilst on the tube and that does seem to help a little. So distractions from food and a relaxing outlet ate my friends. I'm not an expert but am trying to build this into my lifestyle change otherwise I won't really manage it and will end up in Greggs bakery taking home cake!
