Hi,
got the good news on thursday, was kinda expecting it to tell the truth. I was 82 and 13 on when I was tested. Still waiting to find out for sure what type, they say type2 but I have my doubts.
Anyway I've been given the 8weeks to turn your life around vibe and was just wondering if it's possible to hit that much of a mission that in 8weeks time am not put on any medication? I hate taking pills or medication in general, won't even take a paracetamol lol. Cheers

Hi @Rydo, 82 and 13, Welcome, do you know what those results are..was the 82 an HbA1c result, and the 13 a blood glucose level.
What symptoms have you been having prior to diagnosis, weight gain, weight loss, thirst, excess urination, poor sleep, tiredness, lethargy or..?
You’re going to be told by others here to adopt a low carbohydrate , higher healthy fat diet, which kinda goes against the general diet advice for the last 20 yrs or so, but it works
Carbohydrates are not only the simple sugars found in sweet things like cakes, biscuits etc but the more complex starches found in any wheat, rice, potato products such as bread, pasta, noodles etc.
Contrary to what you might think, you can eat higher fat & protein things so no wheat or Corn cereals for breakfast but bacon & egg is ok..
I suggest you get a BG Meter to monitor your body’s response to foods, and please read about the cheaper recommended ones on this forum.
If you want to try turn it around in 8 weeks.it’s going to be difficult, my advice is go low carb and you might need an app or book to check carb values of every food you put in your mouth, try exercise a bit more, anything more than you do already is good, unless your a marathon runner type, try lose any excess weight if your BMI is above normal.
It worked for me not in 8 weeks, but in 3 months I did all of the above reduced my A1c from 77 to 35, but with the help of Metformin ...
Very best luck & regards ..!

Thanks Martin for taking the time to reply, yeah lots of conflicting advice from the NHS to what ive heard works for a lot of people. Low carb etc. Meter is on its way for the BGL and a 5mile walk this morning.

Welcome Rydo, I would completely agree with Martin, I follow the low carb healthy fats and also dropped from a bg of 22 to a much more comfortable 5.5 in around 3 months but I also take metformin. Everything you need to know can be found on this forum, testing your bg regularly is how you will work out what foods work best for you or don’t, I found it helpful to keep a food diary alongside my bg results. You need to test before meals and again around 2 hours after. Take some time to read the threads and do ask any questions along the way :D

Hi @Rydo , welcome to the club no one wants to join and our friendly forum.
The trouble with the usual dietary advise is, as far as I can tell the food industry was involved in developing it, so they have a vested interest .

You have your doubts about being T2. So a little more info would help us.
What symptoms did/do you have . Did your symptoms come on fast or slowly over time, Have you lost weight / gained weight, thirst, tiredness, is their any history of diabetes in your family if so what type
Sorry for all the questions, it’s just they will help us guide you what action to take if we too think you may be right.

I am assuming the 82 was the Hb1ac its usually a blood sample from the arm and the 13 was from a finger prick it’s a spot test to see what your blood glucose levels are at that time and is a totally different measurement from the Hb1ac which is an average of your levels over the past 12 or so weeks .

If you have T2 it is sometimes possible to control it with dietary changes and exersize but sometimes medication is necessary as well.

You have already been given good advise so I won’t repeat it, but it’s a good idea to keep a food diary and have a read of, Test review adjust by Alan S loraldiabetes.blogspot.com
This explains how to use your meter to check how the various carbohydrates affect you, as we are all individual in this respect.

Ask us as many questions about diabetes as you need to, we’ll do our best to khelp.

Well done for doing the 5m walk. You will feel better for it 🙂. Good luck & welcome Rydo

I agree although I would say eight weeks is pushing it a bit, I was given a year!
I was 58 at diagnosis reduced to 51 three months later and now 45 a year later, all achieve by diet alone, exercise isn't really my thing, too much like had work and anyway you into in the county makes walking difficult as most roads are narrow with no pavements.
Don't forget if you don't want to take medication the doctor cannot make you.

Thanks again everyone for replying, going with low carb as advised. It's what I thought was the best course but was kinda confused when advised other wise at the GPs. My auld Maw changed her life style by following Dr Noakes banting and lost loads of weight and is fitter now than 20years ago. So I've been getting the low carb diet advice non stop for the last three years from her, saying am too unhealthy. Endless amounts of 2lt bottles of irn bru which I actually stopped drinking because barrs cut the sugar lol moved straight on to Coke a Cola. Chocolate Love it fried foods etc take away the usual story I guess. Anyway I drive a Lorry which is another story but i kept needing to pee Every time I stopped driving. So off to the doctors i went and Sadly it's took the GP to tell me I've got diabetes for me to have my first ever tuna steak and veg for dinner lol
So again thanks for pointing me I the right direction hopefully. Got my BG monitor today and of course I've no idea what am doing so I tested myself immediately after eating a bowl of soup for lunch and it's went from 13 on Friday morning at the doctors to 9.3 this afternoon. So am hoping that's good. Thanks again everyone.

You need cut carbs more sorry, brutal advice and I know but , it’s heading in the right direction so very well done , but your diet needs less carbs, best of luck ..although what works for one might not work for another. How rigorous are you with low carb, 9.3 isn’t too bad try get to 5.0 -7.0 fasting ie after wake up in morning...even close to these would be good
Regards
M

Am saying low carb Martin, but really cutting all carbs out ie bread pasta etc and just getting them through the veg. I was 7.2 this morning fasting. And I was 7.0 this afternoon. So fingers crossed I'll be nearer that 5.0 soon.
