Relationship to Diabetes

New to the forum. Looking to get advice and dietary information. Have to make a lifestyle change and up for the challenge.
 
Hi PBM12, welcome 🙂 you will find loads of information here so do take some time to have a good read through the threads. Basically it’s carbohydrates that are the enemy, rice, pasta, potatoes and bread although many of us do use Burgen Bread, a low carb soy and linseed option that works for sandwiches or toast. Fruits clan also be a bit tricky, especially tropical ones as they are particularly high in natural sugar, the rule of thumb is two small pieces a day. Some can tolerate a few berries but sadly I can’t :(, the only way to work out what foods work fit you is to test your bloods before you eat and about 2 hours after and aim for a rise of no more than 2, a food diary is quite helpful as you will see patterns. Do ask any questions you have, we are quite a friendly bunch 😉
 
Although some people can manage small amounts of high carb foods, not everyone can.
I have normal BG levels and almost normal Hba1c, but that is after two years of eating mostly low carb foods, those with 10 percent carbs or less.
By testing your BG levels two hours after starting to eat you can detect the things which cause spikes in blood glucose and either reduce or eliminate them.
 
Hi PBM and welcome from another Newbie.

Learning fast here, I was told Belvita were fine as they slow release over 4 hours (lies all lies). Tried ONE yesterday and my BG went WHEEEEEEEE!

Me n Belvita are not friends. I’m wondering if anyone has ever tried making biscuits from chicken...

Hi @PBM12 . Welcome to the forum. You’ve found a great place for info and cyber support from people who know this condition from the inside.

The thing with diabetes is that it’s very individual , what works for one doesn’t for another , this is where self testing comes in handy.
Initially reduce portions of these fast acting carbohydrates and until you find good substitutes fill up on veg, esp the leafy green kind .
Potatoes esp mashed , rice, pasta, bread esp white. Fruit can be problematic, berries are often tolerated better , breakfast cereals.

Avoid fruit juice and grapes.

Now for good stuff , this is just a small selection to get you started .
If you eat meat, all meat is fine including high meat content sausages and burgers, cheese, butter, milk, eggs cooked anyway you like, veg, berries, mushrooms , some nuts are low carb, fish but preferably not the battered variety.

I ignore the traffic light system on the front of packs and tinned goods as it does not contain the info I need . Instead I check the nutritional label on the back and I ignore everything other that the carbohydrate content any sugar is already included in the carb content.

Diabetes is a marathon not a sprint, so please don’t set yourself up to fail by being to strict initially by cutting out the baddies completely, till you find good substitutes you like, just reduce them.

Also ask all the questions you you need to about diabetes and we’ll do our best to help.

If you want to test and as is most likely Gp won’t provide you with a glucose meter and test strips , this is one of the cheapest meters to self fund the ongoing cost of the test strips. It’s test strips are £8 for a pot of 50 , where high street brands ar in excess of £15.
You’ll need to buy more test strips and a box of lancets as they only give 10 in starter packs
