T2 -1-week in very confused on what you can eat and what you can't eat but will struggle on and try and make sense of it all will get there in the end

Hello @KevT2 , welcome to the forum.
You have come to the right place for info and advise from people who live with this condition.
So feel free to pick our brains ok.

Have you been put on any medications
What was your Hb1ac result.

As to what to eat, that’s easy.
Protein in all it forms is fine .
And providing you don’t have a medical condition that means you need to cut down, good fats are fine .

It’s carbohydrates we can’t handle too well any more , especially the starchy ones, potatoes, bread , pasta and rice.
Some need to be careful with fruit, anything with berry as part I’d it’s name is often tolerated better., oh fruit juice is not a good idea either
Now I know your now thinking OMG , but their are lots of suitable substitutes, and if you self test your blood glucose levels , you may well find that your body tolerates certain carbohydrates better than others.

Don’t bother checking the traffic light system on the front of packs or tins as it doesn’t contain the one bit of vital info we need, instead turn to the back and look at the total carbohydrate content in the nutritional table.

Sorry got to go, others will be along soon.

hi thanks for your reply I have been put on meds but staying away from them and the moment, trying to manage it with a diet don't know whether it's wrong or right but we'll see what happens over a few weeks kind regards kevT2

Welcome @KevT2

I was started on meds and took them - I was keen to get my blood glucose down. Once down I came off them with the support of my GP

As @Anitram says your HbA1c is important. 48 is the cut-off point for a diabetes diagnosis although a number of members of the forum started out over 100.

It is possible to manage with diet and many of us do, but in the beginning it usually depends on how far into diabetes territory you are. if you're only just in then it makes sense to try. Do you know what your HbA1c was?
hi my blood sugar level was 17.1 which has rapidly gone down to 9.8 in 3 days, due to I think was I was on antibiotics at the time of the blood test and had an infection and ended the antibiotics 5 days ago, I read that this could elevate your blood sugar levels? Plus eating a lot healthily as well.
Kind regards

17 .1 would be a spot blood glucose level, a HBA1C would be a figure most probably over 48.

I was diagnosed with that exact level, and my Hba1c was 91.
The foods to really cut down on are those with a high carbohydrate content, sugars and starches, and increase proteins and fats. Have low carb veges and salads and you should see your blood glucose levels staying down, 10 at the most, as long as you are an uncomplicated type two like me.

Hello and welcome to the forum @KevT2 🙂

Welcome to the forum @KevT2

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

Yes infections and injury can elevate BG levels, as the body releases glucose and stress hormones to help fuel the recovery.

One of the biggest questions when newly diagnosed is often ‘what can I eat’ and while there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will be wanting to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits. So you may have to look at reducing portions of these, despite their healthy reputation, if your body cannot cope with them.

The really tricky thing is that blood glucose responses to various foods are highly individual, and it can be impossible to say which types and amounts of carbohydrate will ‘spike’ your BG without checking for yourself. Were the BG results you mentioned ones you took yourself? Or were they taken at the surgery?

Checking your own BG before and again 2hrs after eating can give you very direct feedback about how your body copes with any particular meal. Typically members here look for a rise in BG of no more than 2-3mmol/L by 2 hours after eating.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on
