Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hey all

Hope you all are ok - So my name is Stuart I'm 46 from Fife in Scotland Im type 2 and first diagnosed about 10 years ago however like a muppet I didn't give it the attention it deserved - I would take my meds until I felt better then come off them cos I felt ok
That was until last week when I had a mini stroke - now diabetes wasn't the cause of this but it was certainly a factor and yes I admit I was daft not taking heed before but not even I am daft enough to ignore this now.
So if anyone has any advice on 2 things I would apricate it

1. How do you keep focused ?
2, Good apps for tracking progress ?
3. Easy to do exercise ?

Cheers

Stuart

Hi Stuart
I keep focused by reminding myself what happens when I don’t and how bad I feel when I get a high blood sugar reading.
Not sure about apps but I’m sure someone else will know. I find my Fitbit helps motivate me with exercise though.
Easiest exercise if you’re not used to it but are mobile is walking. I aim to do 10,000 steps a day, or 7,000 on days when I cycle to work. I have built up to this from doing virtually nothing. I always try and go for a walk at lunchtime and get up and walk about every hour at work and in the advert breaks when watching TV in the evenings. I recently watched a programme where they demonstrated that just spending less time seated makes a positive difference to blood sugar levels.

Hi @SRR1972 Welcome to the forum. I trust you are recovering well from your mini stroke.
Your sure didn’t have an easy wake up call did you. I would use that to keep yourself focused, plus family esp if you have children.
How about doing some regular walking , you can start out as gently as you like/need to, perhaps just round the house at first then gradually build up.
Are you under the care of a stroke clinic ? If so they may be able to advise on some suitable exersizes or may be able to refer you to their own classes.

I’ve found the guys and gals here help to keep me focused, and when I fall off the wagon they give me a supportive boost back up, we would love to be able to help you the same way.

I think most people here find frequent self-testing pretty much essential for getting a handle on things & it certainly helps to keep you focused on getting yr BG under control.

I've also found joining this thread https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/group-7-day-waking-average.20148/ good for focus too - friendly little game to keep track of waking BG levels, more fun when you're doing it in company.

Hello and welcome @SRR1972 🙂

I hope things are improving for you after your mini stroke.

I use mySugr app to log my blood sugar etc , MyFitnessPal is also a good way to log exercise diet etc.

Motivation- I have complications and I haven't got a millimetre of wiggle room to let my control go haywire - doesn't mean I don't have battles with it though! As long as I know I am doing my best I can live with that.🙂 Reading what others do keeps me motivated and trying new things that I read about on here.

Best Wishes 🙂

Welcome! Wow that is some wake up call!! Checking my bloods is my motivation, I don’t do it every day now but I do it a few times a week just to keep me on my toes and keep my fingers out of the biscuits!! I walk, it took a while to build my stamina up but I can now go for around an hour, I do borrow my neighbours dog, it helps me stay motivated to walk and makes it feel like normal activity 😉
