Hi

Just found this forum by chance while researching Glicazide.

Have recently been diagnosed with DMO and started Lucentis treatment two weeks ago and thought my T2 was under control...............but not.

Have been taking 80mg glicazide for 12 yrs and waiting for a referral to hospital diabetic clinic. GP has told me to double dose but it doesnt seem to be doing much if anything and very slow to act.

Had no testing meter anymore but just bought one and fingers like pin cushions trying to find out what is happening. :(:(

Um cant understand how icons work! :(:( Ah got them from preview but couldnt on my typed version before that.

Hi and welcome to the forum. 🙂

If I recall arights, 80mg of Gliclazide is already the maximum dose. More to the point, when I got taken off Gliclazide back in December and asked why (not challenging the decision, just seeking information), I was told that it was because I had been on it for five years, and that it no longer works after a while. It sounds to me as if what you really need is a different medication, so good luck getting that clinic referral where hopefully you will be able to get a (properly qualified, unlike mine) second opinion.

Welcome to the forum Katpaul🙂 I am sorry to hear about your Diabetic Macular Odema diagnosis. I have chronic macular odema in one eye and it has made my life difficult BUT a) part of the problem for me is because I have nystagmoid movements in my "good" eye and b) my macular odema was caused six years ago and isn't because of diabetes but caused by a retinal vein occlusion. By the time Lucentis was introduced years later the damage had been done.
I understand that Lucentis is excellent for treating DMO so, along with the improved control helped by the hospital, you should be on track for a good outcome🙂

Hi katpaul, welcome to the forum 🙂 It's possible that, as Robert suggests, gliclazide is no longer a suitable medication for you. It works by stimulating your pancreas to produce more insulin, but it is thought that, eventually, your beta cells become no longer capable of responding, rendering the medication ineffective. 320mg is actually the maximum dose, although I have rarely heard of anyone on a dose that high. I am sure you will get some answers at the hospital clinic, and I suspect that you may need to start on insulin injections to help bring your levels under control.

Welcome to the forum katpaul 🙂

Thank you all.

Please can you tell me how to know if I have replies.............I have subscribed this thread and another but no email..............sorry slightly off topic but your replies are of great interest to me.

Thank you AJ I have to assume that the specialists know what they are doing as I have no clue but both eyes have been scanned a number of times now.

The eye clinic is fairly near to me and all the people there are unbelievably caring and the improvement in my right eye was a real surprise.

I am quite worried now Northener as I have a chaotic lifestlle which is just my nature and am seriously older! and this will never change, Also suffer with acute anxiety and things like this are a massiver trigger.

As far as I know Robert 320 is max dose for Glucazide but 160 is making me feel rubbish at times and sugar levels despite eating what is supposed to be very low sugar stuff sends me up to 21 which gradually comes down 12.5 at lowest. So if this is an improvement...............dont know what level would be classed as very high enough to cause the eye damage.

Sorry rambling and panicking

I know very little about Gliclazide, so won't comment on that. But, if 12.5 is as low as your bloods go at the moment, then that seems higher than I believe would be considered comfortable. Are you trying to do anything with your diet to impact your bloods, as well as taking your medication?

Hi katpaul, no need to panic, it's early days yet with the new dose! If you're not already doing it, it would be worthwhile following a rigorous testing schedule so that you can determine what foods you tolerate well and what you should avoid or reduce in your diet. It's not enough just to avoid sugar, ALL carbs will raise your blood glucose levels - so potatoes, rice, pasta, bread etc. must also be kept within tolerable limits. I'd suggest having a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S , which is a good guide to efficient testing. Bear in mind also that you need to know your levels before eating as well as after so you can tell how much the food has raised your levels by - getting a 14 after eating if you were 12 before is not as bad as a 14 after starting at 6 🙂

Apologies if you already know all this, but it's often the case that education for T2s is sadly lacking or of poor quality.

All that I am eating is stuff very low in sugar or with non-existant sugar!

Now the new meter that only got on Friday is down as the battery has just gone so my rigerous testing has had to stop

Thank you....dam just missed first goal in France v Korea S ....sigh

KatPaull ALL carbohydrates can affect your blood sugar levels, not just sugars. PLEASE get that battery sorted, get testing again and start looking for patterns between what you eat and your levels. You MUST do everything that you can do to get your levels down to 5 or 6 - I know that you are limited until you see the hospital but the longer your levels are high the more damage to your eyes and there is only so much that the eye consultants can do. I'm sure that you know this but your life will be radically changed if your DMO progresses and you can no longer read or do any detail work because of it. Can you phone the hospital to arrange to speak to a Diabetic Specialist nurse - telling him/her what your levels are and asking for advice. Please take action ASAP. I don't want to worry you but equally you do need to take action. Please keep talking to us.

Hi AJ When I said I was eating things with low sugar...............I meant carbs where it says they are very low sugar...............dont the labels on stuff mean any thing?

Just got new battery today so meter up and running.

Dont have the appointment yet so nobody to ring except appts, which I will chase again later in week.

Levels fluctulate madly even after eating same food as day before, total mystery to me why.

Yes I would like to keep talking cos nobody else to talk to!

Northener thank you for links and info. Yes I knew about before and after food levels but my levels rise to 21 after eating anything! They then come back to 12 over time.

Just got meter up and working again but my fingers hurt from testing :(

There comes a point where after the 12 it goes up again but not eaten anything!

Just want that appt to come through
