Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello, Ive just joined and would like to introduce myself.
Last August I was informed I had cancer of the pancreas and had surgery to remove it among other parts. Currently going through chemotherapy.
Since losing my pancreas I've become a type 1 diabetic and finding difficult to manage blood levels due to chemo treatment. I'm hoping to share and receive advice with you all in the future.

God afternoon Phil and welcome to the forum, which no one wants to need to join. I have learnt more from people on here than anywhere else, and also value the excellent suppport available.

I can’t offer any specific advice about chemo, but I do know that changes in meds make our control more of a problem. There are others on here who are in a similar position to you and I am sure they will pop up when they can with some ideas. If you felt able to you could start a thread specifically about T1 and chemo and that may help to highlight your issues to others.

Can you tell us a little more about how you manage your Diabetes. What insulin’s are you using? With a bit more info we can give more specific help.

Phil - believe you me - controlling BG is no ride in the park without any additional health problems - is by no means easy anyway, it's a lot to have to get your head round all of a sudden, full stop.

As SB says - we have a number of members who've found themselves in your position and are currently coping for instance @eggyg and @khskel, also a complete gang of 'Creonistas' who may be able to help with that side of things.

Hopefully they'll see this thread.

Hi @Philwill, welcome, although I am sorry you have to be here. Yes, Jenny is right I’m in a similar boat to yourself except I had a distal pancreatectomy ( removal of body and tail ) and a splenectomy thrown in for good measure. I suspect you have too. I was one of the lucky ones and my tumour was found to be pre cancerous so I fortunately didn’t have any chemotherapy or radiation so can’t help you on that score. First things first though, you need to get the chemo over with before worrying too much about your diabetes, obviously you don’t want to be eating cakes, biscuits, sweets etc and try and cut down on bread, potatoes, pasta, rice. As has been mentioned the treatment will interfere with your blood glucose as any illness/ infection can do. We do have a handful of folk on the forum currently going through similar and they will probably be more helpful than me. I can help afterwards though. As @SB2015 mentioned start a separate thread and hopefully the aforementioned will see it. Please feel free to ask any questions whatsoever. We’re here to help you and be a sounding board too, so rant and rave as much as you want. Elaine.
