Hi all, my name is Sue and I just thought I’d stop by and introduce myself.
I was newly diagnose with type 2 Diabetes back in April, five months before my 60th birthday, and I’ve also been on meds for underactive thyroid since my early thirty’s, which in turn added to my weight problem. In December last year I hit the scales at 20st 3lb.
The diabetes was a total shock really if I’m honest. Despite the fact I knew my weight, and lack of exercise were all factors that could lead to it, all the symptoms I was getting, I was putting down to my thyroid.
My first blood glucose test came back a 12.8 and the HbA1c was 87, so I was put on 500mg Metformin twice a day.
Like many of you, I was told that I wouldn’t be given a monitor as they are only issued to people on Insulin, and to come back for my next HbA1c test in four months.
In the mean time I was signed up to do a six week X-Pert Diabetes course, which I have to say I found very interesting. It answered so many of the questions I had and covered a lot of things I hadn’t even thought about. The courses are totally free and apparently are available country wide, so you can ask your GP to refer you or have a look on their X-Pert Diabetes web site…..well worth it I think.
I had my second HbA1c test in August and the good news is that it’s back down to 43, I’m still not comfortable, not really knowing what my blood glucose levels are doing day to day and what effects the foods I’m eating are having, so I brought a meter so that I can just check now and again. I did my first test this morning and before breakfast it was 5.3 and two hours after a breakfast of a bowl of fruit and fibre with skimmed milk, my reading was 7, which I think was ok.
I’m back following a tweaked Slimming World diet again too and since December have lost 3 stone…….and I’ve started going swimming twice a week, doing 32 lengths each time, making a mile a week.
So, it’s still early days for me but I’m hoping that if things keep going the way they are, I can stay on top of this and keep everything under control……..fingers crossed!
