Hi guys,

Just wanted to say Hello!

My name's Vicki, I'm 30 and was diagnosed with T2 five years ago. I started with dietary control, progressing to lots of different tablets.
Two weeks ago, I was blood tested and actually found to be slow-onset T1, so have started on insulin instead. Which is great as I'm feeling tons better, and also get to stop Metformin which had horrendous side affects for me!

Phew - what a long intro! Anyway, looking forward to chatting with you all 🙂

Hi Vicki, welcome to the forum 🙂 That's an interesting, and not uncommon, progression of your diagnosis - many people who are slow-onset Type 1 are initially diagnosed as Type 2 because often there is little to distinguish between the two unless the proper tests are undertaken. Type 1, as you may know, is autoimmune in origin, and results in a decline in the number of insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Type 2 is primarily due to insulin resistance, where you can be happily producing gallons of insulin, but can't use it properly. Often, in adulthood, the perception is that you must be Type 2 if you're not almost comatose!

Thankfully, you now have the correct diagnosis which means that you are actually getting the treatment appropriate to your condition 🙂 What insulin regime are you on? Have you experienced any problems? Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, there are loads of very knowledgeable and experienced people here who will be more than happy to help out. 🙂 I would highly recommend getting a copy of
Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents by Ragnar Hanas which covers all aspects of living with Type 1 and is an excellent reference, regardless of your age!

I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Welcome Vicki. Glad you're feeling better on insulin 🙂

Welcome to the forum mni-Vicki 🙂

Welcome mini-Vicki, glad the insulin is doing the trick for you 🙂

Welcome to the forum. Personally I think the sooner you go on insulin the better for your health. Good luck.

Gosh that was quick! - took my friend 8 years to get the test!

Thank you all for saying hi!
I'm on humalog before meals and lantus in the evening. It seems to be working well so far. My diabetic nurse has been very conservative with my doses, as I was terrified of having hypos but my levels are coming down really well now, so I'm feeling so much more positive! This morning my starving BG was 5.7. I think that's the lowest it's ever been 🙂
This forum is a great resource, and everyone has been so lovely 🙂

That's really great to hear Vicki! 🙂 And a terrific fasting level, well done! 🙂

Hi, and welcome. I think metformin has horrible effects on everybody, I was glad to stop that too.

Hiya! - the morning BG is normally called your fasting BG Vicki! - but if you are starving by then - call it what you want!

Thanks trophywench! I must admit I was sooo hungry when I took it yesterday morning, so my brain must have been a bit fuzzy 😛
