Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone. My name is Ann and I'm fairly newly diagnosed as type 2. I'm 54 years old and a mum of two and nanny to two gorgeous little boys.
Hope to learn loads and maybe make a friend or two.

Hi Ann and welcome.

Sorry to hear that you recently got the D diagnosis. How are you coping with that? We all know it can be a bit overwhelming at first, but it does get easier.

Would you like to tell us a bit about your diabetes diagnosis? Things like how it came about ie red flagged from a routine blood test or perhaps symptomatic and if so what symptoms. What if any medication you have been given to help manage your diabetes and what dietary/lifestyle advice. Also, if you know it, what your HbA1c result is.... this is the blood test used to diagnose diabetes and will usually be a number in excess of 47 for a full diagnosis but it can be into 3 figures if things have gone seriously awry. How high your result is, gives an indication of how significant the lifestyle changes may need to be to hopefully get things back down into the normal range. Whatever changes you make are best done slowly and steadily so that your levels come down gently as dramatic changes can put quite a strain on the fine blood vessels, particularly those in the eyes which are quite fragile. Diabetes is a marathon not a sprint as we say here, so starting slow and steady with changes is the best policy.

Please feel free to ask any questions you have. It can all be very confusing at first and most of us knew very little about diabetes when we were diagnosed so don't feel embarrassed about not knowing basic stuff. If you don't know or understand something just ask.... if you need advice or support, just ask. If you want to rant about the unfairness of it all... feel free..... we all know how challenging and frustrating it can be and enabling people to let off steam is another function of the forum... so make yourself at home and we look forward to getting to know you better and accompanying you on your journey with diabetes.
