Hi @owl61uk and welcome to the forum!

With your experience I’m sure you’ll be able to teach the newer T1’s a thing or two!

Hi Owl and welcome from me too.

Are you on a pump or MDI? Which insulin(s) do you use? Do you have Freestyle Libre?
The forum is great for learning new tips and tricks and hopefully we can learn something from you too, with all that experience behind you. Look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome to the forum Owl
Great to have your experience on here.

How do you manage your diabetes?

Thanks for the welcome.

Started on a pump about 18 months ago, Medtronic 640 using Novorapid and after a rough start with the pump, I was ready to go back to MDI, I persevered with it. Just about go the doses right at moment, so overall my control has improved.

If I am honest, I probably only started taking my diabetes seriously around 4 years ago, so 35 years of not having the best control. Dont get me wrong I was never outrageous with it, well maybe sometimes, and thought I was doing OK, but really I wasn't. Hbac1 was around 75 about 4 years ago, but changed to new clinic at hospital instead of GP and they are fantastic. Great support and encouragement from them.

They helped get me the Libre, which has helped no end, as well as pump. Hbac1 was down to 55 about 9 months ago, but not seen clinic since Covid. My Libre reports tell me this is now around 42, but we all know how inaccurate that can be. I would guesstimate that I am probably around 50, not perfect but getting there

You have certainly got to grips with things now.

The pump certainly takes a bit of time to get matched to your own needs. Like you I found that it helped me to get much better control of my levels and also made life a lot more flexible.

It was coming on here that made me realise that I need to make changes to my basal rates more often than I had expected. I sometimes ‘interview a change’ by using a temporary basal rate (not sure what it is called in Medtronic) before going into to change it all.

The Libre was the game changer showing me what was going on between meals, and just how big the post meal spikes were. I have found pre-bolusing for meals has sorted out those and changed mountain peaks into gentle fells.

Keep in touch and fire away with any questions that you have.

Welcome to the forum from a relatively new type 1, only 7 years in.

Welcome from another Type 1 🙂

That’s a great improvement in your HbA1C 😎
