Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hey guys,

Just got out of hospital on Saturday been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, just want to know if anyone's got any friendly tips and advice like what apps to use for the carbs to count etc ?

Don't get me wrong the hospital explained a lot!, but its lots to take in at one time.

Any help would be great and would appreciate it a lot.

Thanks!

The carbs and cals book was my Bible. That and becoming an avid reader of food labels.

Carbs and Cals also available as an App ! For things sold in branded packages, yes to the labels or the makers websites. For unbranded stuff like fruit and veg - just Google whatever it is and the word 'nutrition'. Easy peasy mate.

Welcome @Jimjams . Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but glad that you have found the forum. There is a lot to learn very quickly with T1 but there is plenty of help available on here, and I have certainly learnt most of the practicalities from people on here.

I have carbs and Cals on my phone and use that when out to get a best guess. At home I weigh stuff, and also use the food labels. Failing that Google is good. Carbs in .... usually gives me the info. I just take the per 100g and go from there. Dried goods are sometimes a bit muddling as they tend to give the carbs once cooked (how do I weigh the lasagne after it is cooked!). Buried in the label somewhere there is usually a sentence saying the conversion from dried to cooked.

More generally as someone newly diagnosed you might find the book Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas useful. Ignore the age reference. I was 53 at diagnosis and T1 is T1. It explains everything very clearly and is well referenced, and seems to cover it all. It is regularly updated with the most recent technology so worth looking for the most recent edition.

Keep in touch and feel free to ask absolutely any questions that you have. No questions are considered silly on here.

Hi @Jimjams and welcome 🙂

I find this website helpful for carb-counting - you can change the amount to a sensible one for the food you're eating (eg no. of grams or no. of cupsful) and then scroll down to see the carbs (it gives all the nutritional information, but it's only carbs you need to check).

This is the book @SB2015 mentioned - a lot of people here have found it helpful.

Welcome Jimjams. It comes to you after a while. Carb Counting etc. Good luck. 🙂. No two days are exactly the same or people would just eat the same every day.o_O
