Type 2
Hi there

I have recently been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, probably having had it for a length of time now without it being diagnosed.

Everything very new and scary, and just had my retinal tests today - anxious as the person doing them sais she could see bleeds, but wouldn't go into any detail..

Hi, welcome to the forum, glad you found us 🙂. Getting a diagnosis is a worrying time, but you've come to a great place for support. I like the name, by the way 🙂

Welcome to the forum. I was diagnosed type 2 about 3 months ago. I've found this forum unbeatable for sound advice and the odd laugh. Hope your retinal screening comes back clear.

Thank you both 🙂 I was diagnosed in December with an Hba1c of 80........due second test in February.
Dietary things worry me although I used to drink a lot of Sugared Pop, and replaced that with Zero and Sugar Free drinks now.

Very fussy eater so going to struggle with diet I think :(

That's a good start. Every little change for the better helps. I'm lucky in that I enjoy cooking (usually) so I've taken on the lower carb way of life as a culinary challenge. Have a browse in the recipes section and the what did you eat yesterday section, as I've found inspiration there. Are there ways in which you could adapt your favourite meals?

Welcome to the club! If you haven’t already done so then I suggest you have look at the links for newbies at the top of this section - lots of help to get you started on dealing with your new challenges. The folk on this site have helped me enormously and you need never feel you are facing your diabetes alone, we’re all in it together, here for each other through triumphs and setbacks. Fingers crossed for your retinopathy result, let us know how you get on.

Sorry to hear about your eyes - however the technicians who do the photos for us aren't normally qualified optometrists - hence they can't diagnose anything at all - in fact I don't think they should have said that to you.

The photos are ALL checked by properly qualified people however, before we're told the results although at least if he/she thinks they've spotted something not right - hopefully that means yours goes near the top of the pile for checking and it won't be very long before you hear something.

The good news is - a lot of 'early' retinal damage can be reversed once you get your blood glucose back under proper control and keep it there. yeah yeah you're a fussy eater so it may seem like hard work - nobody ever said having a lifelong medical condition would be easy - and it certainly isn't. But I know damn well what my priority would be right now - get yourself a meter, get testing your blood at home and get your BG back to as near normal as humanly possible.

Loss of eyesight is a FAR worse prospect than having to eat a few different combinations of foods prepared in different ways!

Thanks Scottish and Trophy - good advice same as the others, and I think i will definitely need to have a lot of support but am sure I have joined the correct place 🙂

Welcome... joining this forum is the best thing you could have done. At my first screening the lady who carried it out said .... nothing to worry about it looks fine .... my results showed damage however. But twelve months later with dietary change I had a clear result.... it’s a bumpy path but with the support of this site you’ll be fine. X

Welcome to the forum 🙂

I found that I didn't actually have to change my diet a huge amount to accommodate the low carb aspect of it that I needed, the main help aside from cutting out all the bad carbs was to knuckle down on regulating my portion sizes. But there are loads of good ideas on here for meals.
