Hello johnj and welcome to the forum. I am sorry but I am unable to help with any answers - I am Type1 - but there are Type 2's on here who may be able to offer you much more information than I can. I just didn't want you to think that the lack of responses is normal, it is not, it is Sunday and lunch time and members are doing other things. I am certain that other members will be along shortly to try and help you.

Are you on any medication?

You say you want to improve your health and eat properly but some things you have listed are quite carbohydrate heavy and as a diabetic it's carbohydrates you struggle to tolerate/deal with, most Type 2's cant tolerate cereals, grapes are known as sugar bombs and can even be used to treat low blood sugars, banana's can be very carbohydrate heavy, most diabetics tend to reduce their carb intake to better manage their blood glucose

To get a better idea of things you need to build a set of results on regular testing rather than just 1 day worth etc
xx

Hi there @johnj. Welcome to the forum. 🙂 There’s lots of Type 2ers here with tons of experience and advice. I’m sure on of them’ll be along soon!

Hi @johnj , I'm a fellow type 2 and I have to agree with what @Kaylz says, for me at least. I'm on metformin and have pretty much cut out carbs, especially refined carbs like bread and potatoes. I can't tolerate bran flakes, grapes or bananas either!

As per advice from this forum I check my glucose just before a meal and 2 hours after my first bite of a meal, as this gives the best reading. As a general rule I'm between 5 & 7 mmol, and after a carb free meal it goes up around just 1 or 2. If I have carbs, it can spike up to 10 or 11.

Keeping a food diary has been essential for me so I know what I can and can't eat. For example some people can't tolerate berries, but I can manage strawberries and blueberries without increasing my blood sugar much, even though too much fruit isn't recommended due to the natural sugars in it.

I eat very well and am never hungry now, I'm losing weight and my blood sugar is, on the whole, behaving itself.

You can check out the ideas for meals on this thread: https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/what-did-you-eat-yesterday.30349/ It's been really useful for me to see what other people can eat and gives me ideas for trying out new foods to add to my food diary to see if it suits me or not.

Finally, welcome to the forum, hope you find the answers you are looking for x

Try this: test before you eat, and then two hour or so after the meal. You now have two numbers - subtract the before number from the after number. The lower the answer the better, you should aim to get it below 2. If it is much higher say 5, 6 or more then what you ate was not suitable for you at all.

You might say that this means testing six times a day. but once you have discovered what is good for YOU you only need to retest now and then or when you want to try a new dish.

You should avoid all things which contain carbohydrates in any quantity, anything made with flour, pasta, rice, spuds sweet fruits and beries... There not much left you mught think. It might amaze you to learn that a full English breakfast bacon egg mushroom tomartos (avoid spuds and things made from them) all fried in good oil is much better for type 2 than anything that says that it is healthy, AND that you may even loose weight eating these things.

Welcome to the forum @johnj

Thanks for persevering with the typing and computers malarkey to share your story - it will really help folks here give you support and helpful pointers.

It’s great that you are able to check your own BG levels before and again after foods, as others have suggested, this can really help you see the effect that different foods have on your body, but you may find it helpful to alter the timing of your second BG check to somewhere between 1 and 2 hours as this is most likely when your BG reaches its highest for the meal. Then go through a oeriod of experimentation, carb reduction, and swaps to see if you can get your ‘meal rises’ to 2-3mmol/L.

Some of your meals, like your chicken and veg look like they are working pretty well for you already, but breakfast cereal (as it is for many members) seems to be a bit more of a challenge for your body to cope with.
