Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi I’m a type 1 been for 21 years now on Omipod and have the libra
Im just wondering as I cannot get a clear answer off diabetes uk the government or my work , I am a postman and have not received any letter to isolate for twelve weeks and I know I won’t either even though I feel I should be.
The workplace is a joke guidelines set by the government are not happening the amount of parcels letters is at a all time high worse than Christmas so as you can imagine been busy people forget things etc I’m also not to happy delivering parcel been passed about by several different people in and out of our office and the sorting branch before I deliver not to mention the general public is thick and will try to take parcels and letters out of your hand and obviously gates doorbells buttons to the flats can’t imagine all those will be sanitised regularly lol
Is there not a way I can self isolate for the twelve weeks and get some sort of pay as Royal Mail won’t even furlough or whatever it is they do my son who is 5 also has asthma so I’m obviously concerned by this probably explains the amount of hypos I’m having of late too.
Any advice would be great if you know thank you very much

Welcome to the forum @Richielp

I can understand your concerns about your working environment (though I think I remember reading something on the forum a week or two ago about new findings suggesting the virus may not live as long on various surfaces as was once thought?)

The official advice, as I think you have already discovered does not put those with ‘bog standard’ diabetes into the clinically extremely vulnerable group who are being instructed to fully isolate for 12 weeks and for whom extra support is being made available to deliver food and medications.

While peopks with diabetes are at ‘increased risk’ we are only recommended to stringently adhere to social distancing

This is the official page

Obviously there are some parts of that distancing guidance which does not fit easily with your employment. I’m not sure if there is any form of redeployment or adjustment that could be made to your work that might make social distancing more practical - even just wearing gloves and/or using hand sanitiser might help?

If you believe aspects of your individual circumstances put you, or those you live with, at additional risk and vulnerability, you should telephone your GP who can assess your case.

You might also consider calling the Diabetes UK helpline (the number is at the top of the page) which is open during office hours Monday-Friday.
