Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
So second week in trying to get my head round all this! Having another off day so tired.. thought I'd get some soup.. Looking at the different ones in sainsburys and even the healthy options have a higher sugar than normal.. thought I was doing right with a Lentil and Bacon..based on half a can = sugar 1.4g saturates 0.4 fat 1.4.. but then when I looked at the back says carbs 13.2.. not knowing what to do I just had a half a can with a slice of Bergen (fab bread!) I just don't get this carbs deal.. any advice would be much appreciated!:D still hungry so just had some salmon and asparagus.. THIS IS SO HARD!!!! 😡

Hi Charlotte, not all carbs are sugar so the 1.4g of sugar is just that, the rest are starches (11.8g).... To add a little confusion not all carbs are created equal, some have differing affects on us, for example the lentils have a low Glycemic Index (GI) so will be adsorbed slower than the added sugar.
Having mentioned GI, one must consider that your body will adsorb ALL the carbs, just it's the speed at which they are adsorbed (and so causing a lower & more spread out spike which is good so many of us eschew the "recommendations" & eat lower carbs than the dietitians tell us I think that many people on this forum eat 100-150g a day, some of us go a lot lower.

As for the hunger, fat sates the appetite way better than carbs, so the salmon (great source of omega-3 fatty acids) & asparagus is a good choice, I often cook just that for our dinner.... 4-6oz salmon fillets (preferably with skin on) & 4oz asparagus sautéed in Extra Virgin olive oil.

One of the things you will quickly realize is that pre-made foods (like the soup) will have extra carb laden ingredients in addition to the main ones, these can quickly add to the carb count; particularly true of "low fat" food as they need something to make them palatable. As well as reading the nutritional label it's a good idea to read the ingredient list. Most of my food is made from scratch so I know exactly what is in it.... I do have the advantage of working from a home office though.

Good idea to make from scratch..I usually do but having an off day thought I'd go for the easy option!
Home casseroles in a crock pot (slow cooker), quick cheap and using, Swede, carrots leeks etc, you wont even notice the missing spuds. Plus dumplings seem to be okay. Soups, omelettes, steak, salmon, you going to eat some really nice food.

Hi Charlotte
If you don't feel equal to making anything complex or time consuming then I'd suggest an omelette filled with grated cheese/cream cheese/mushrooms/ham/whatever...and a nice side salad. High protein, low carb, extremely satisfying, quick and easy.

EDIT: The phone rang in the middle of my reply and Owen beat me to this suggestion. Well...I tried.

Yes unfortunately! With hba1c at 79 and BS at a near constant 19 :( think I've had it for some time just all of a sudden flared up.. docs say I'm just very unfortunate to get it at my age.. 36 (old woman!)

Ah, some intervention is required, BG at 19 is not at all good, particularly if it's pretty constant. What is your FBG?

I think it was the fasting that was 79? New to all these jargon and terms! Finger prick is 19.. I'm on metformin straight away 🙂

If you like cauliflower, save the stalks and leaves. Make soup with these and an onion and a pile of cheese. Gorgeous and mostly made from things that would get thrown out.

Hi Charlotte. Don't worry about the jargon just ask us and you will soon get to grips with it. Also Their is a list of abbreviations over in the newbies section.
I don't bother looking at anything other than the carbs on the label on the back, I find my weigh and add scales handy for checking the weight of certain foods so I can calculate the carbs in my portion. I don't bother weighing most veg that grows above ground.

If you check out this link..... http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=16567

79 sounds like your HbA1c score which is a 3 month rolling average of BG in your blood, 19 sounds like the finger test (BG as of right now). They are very different numbers as they are measured in different units.

It sounds like you test yourself, is that true? If so what is your testing schedule?
  • FBG, after you wake but before food
  • Before meals
  • 2 hours after meals

oops meant to say, eggs, bacon and high meat content sausages are fine as are high meat content burgers, when I have yummy chips I only allow myself six.
No living on fresh air and lettuce for us :Dp

Ps I have a love hate relationship with my iPad , it kept putting contact instead of content lol

The 79 is your HbA1c, which is the average over the last 3 months. The HbA1c is a different measurement to the finger prick tests. A fasting BG is a finger prick test done as soon as you wake up. Welcome to the forum, BTW.🙂
