Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I've been off work now for over a month with an infection. Now I am noticing my blood sugars going haywire just taken a reading of 14.8 Two hours after a Few sliced of Toast for Breakfast. Have peaked at 24 a few days ago..

I am terribly Thirsty as a result and drinking gallons of water. I'm Type Two by the way.

Can any body give me advice / Reassurance?

Hi Phil. Welcome 🙂

The infection will push your BGs higher. The higher BGs will slow the clearing of your infection. Aany antibiotics will push your BGs higher still.

Are you on meds of any sort ?

If you have no way of bringing your BGs down, you may need to ask your GP for some assistance, at least while you have the infection.

Hi Phi and welcome to the forum
How long have you been diagnosed ?Illness is notorious for causing BS to go all over the place im just getting over a cold myself and have had unusually high results so it may be that as you start to feel better your bloods will start to behave.
what bread did you have and what spread did you use for toast?

Hi Philip, welcome to the forum 🙂 Are you on any medication for your diabetes, and how long have you been dagnosed What is the nature of the infection and how is it being treated? Infections will certainly play havoc with your blood sugar levels - hopefully things will settle down when the infection is gone. What would your normal two-hour reading after breakfast be? And how many slices of toast is 'a few', and what sort of bread is it? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get a feel for how things are and what may be contributing to the highs. 🙂

For many people, toast is a no-no for breakfast. In the mornings, many people experience greater insulin resistance than later in the day, so this can result in carby breakfasts causing blood sugar spikes. An alternative would be to have something protein-based, like eggs and bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes etc.

Welcome Phi11

Here's a link to one example of "Sick Day Rules" for Diabetes. Which part you need depends on your treatment eg insulin / oral antidiabetics (tablets) etc. "When patients should ask for medical advice" is a useful guide for when to seek further help. http://www.patient.co.uk/doctor/Diabetes-and-Intercurrent-Illness.htm

If you can't get hold of your GP / out of hours GP service etc, then NHS Direct (http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/ 0845 4647 in England & Wales) or NHS 24 (http://www.nhs24.com/ 08454 242424 in Scotland) are useful.

Excellent Help

Seems bread is my downfall. I'm a Tablet controlled Type 2. Have been diagnosed now for almost three years.
OK feeling quite rough right now not a good apatite and cant face cooking. So been living on Bread. :(

Need to get myself back on a Good Diet. I tend to eat quite a bit of rice. Is that OK?

Just Checked my sugars again and Its coming down but still high (11.4).

Any carbohydrate will make your levels rise, unfortunately, it's a case of discovering which, and in what portions, make it rise the least by testing before and one or two hours after eating. Basmati rice is considered a better alternative to ordinary rice as it has longer grains and is slower to digest. As for bread - have you tried Burgen Soya and Linseed bread? Not only is it low GI (meaning it cdigests slowly and steadily), but it's also very tasty, especially when toasted! 🙂

Hi Phi I like you used to live off bread until I realised all carbs were trouble, Its trail and error unfortunetly and until you get used to looking out for the things that do the damage these little mishaps will happen, burgen and vogel bread are good alternatives and many of us now use those as a tasty alternative

Hi Phil,
it sounds to me as if you need to go visit your GP for a meds review oh and sort your diet 🙂 As you have been unwell then it's extra stress on your body so perhaps a bit more help from meds until you get over the infection might be in order, hence the visit to the GP.
Hope you feel better soon

Obviously you are eating too many carbohydrates but what are you eating as well as bread and rice?
Did anyone ever explain to you about what your diet should consist of?
Hope you feel better soon and as already said, you need to involve your G.P. for help with your diabetes and the infection because all the time that the blood sugars are high, the infection will take longer to clear.

Hi All,
Your advice is excellent, already taken the advice on board. "Burgen Bread" surprise is available at Tesco and at a price that put a smile on my face. Two Loves and some Basmati Rice being delivered tomorrow. :D

Yes definitely need help from my docs. Could not see them on Friday could not get an appointment so saw the Out of Hours Docs yesterday, some reassurance but basically referred back to my GP's Diabetic Doc, who by the way is the spitting image of Martin Clunes and was obviously the inspiration of his character.🙄

Philip, you may be interested in getting hold of The GL Diet for Dummies - GL, or Glycaemic Load, is a way of choosing and combining foods that will have a slow and steady impact on your blood sugar levels. It's not a weight-loss diet, but a diet in the sense of a way of eating, and allows a great deal of flexibility in your meals once you understand the principles involved. You might also like to browse through our 'Useful Links' thread for lots more links to useful information 🙂

Tempted To change Support

I do not get a lot of support from my GP's mainly just the annual review. Got a lot more support including counseling from a specialist diabetic nurse at first at my local hospital. Then referred on to my GP's. I was getting help from Dietitians etc at the hospital.

Many Thanks. Book Ordered, Hopefully that will be the beginning of a change for the better.🙂

Hi Philip! Sorry to hear you're having problems. Against my nurses advice, I insisted on testing when I was first diagnosed. It helped me to work out what works and what doesn't. I found that 2 weetabix for breakfast was ok for me, but 3 sent my bg into the stratosphere! My 'best' breakfast has worked out to be Hovis multi seeded bread (2 slices) with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spread and 2 eggs scrambled. Blood sugars get back to under 7 in less than 2 hours and I'm not hungry again for hours. However, as you will see quoted here regularly, Your Mileage May Vary - we all react differently and the only way to find out what works and what doesn't is to test whenever you try new foods.

I started Metformin 4 weeks ago and I'm seeing good results with it so far.. However I'm currently loaded with the cold and am interested to see how my bg results are affected by that..! 🙄

would that be like eating toast with peanut butter on it?? (the nuts slow down the release???) or am I totally wrong here?

Peanut butter is a low G.I. (29 on most charts but they do vary).
The nutritional content is the one to worry about if you are trying to lose weight though.

You can use G.I. to lose weight but you have to be careful in your choice of foods and need to know the nutritional values as well. It can be a mine field for some as they assume it will be plain sailing both for blood sugar control and weight loss. There are books available that show you how to control both weight and blood sugars using a low G.I. diet.

I think it is the fat in the PB that slows things down chiefly.

Rick Gallop's Express GI Diet has been recommended here as a good GI and weight-loss plan 🙂

Hi Phil, Welcome to the board and here's hoping you start to pick up soon. This is a great place to really learn all you need to know and the information given here is for people like us with Diabetes by people with diabetes and that is the best way to get what you need.

Peanut butter
I have found that both Tesco and Morrisons do their own brand of PB which is a wholenut one and lower in lots of areas that the Sunpat brands. A little is better than none at all, thing is to watch how much and with what you eat things with which is what I'm learning and yep the GL diet for dummies book is a great starter.

Good luck and keep us posted
