Hi all
Ok 22 yo ss has t1 since around 18months old. I dont really know too much background asi have only been with his dad 5 years and he had almost no contact with son between the ages of 5-16. Baaically he is extremly small and under developed (aged 13 clothes) very under weight at a guess i would say 7 stone. His dad is over 6ft 2. I know his diabetes has been poorly managed for as long as i have known him. The thing is i dont think he has gone through puberty properly (if at all). No hair on face legs chest or underarms (obviously cant comment on pubic area). I want to know if there is anythin that can b done to help him? Everything online i find is about boys that are still in their teen years. It will b a very awkard subject to approach him about so i want to b armed with some facts.

Hi Heyyog, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your worries. How is he generally, is he unwell at all? When I was his age I was also very underweight - maybe 7.5 stone, but pretty healthy (I ran my first marathon around that age!). I am also someone who doesn't have much in the way of body hair, although I do have a full head of hair! I still couldn't grow a beard or moustache to save my life. So, he may be perfectly normal. Diabetes itself shouldn't cause a problem with going through puberty, I wouldn't have thought. I know that if a person has an eating disorder then that can interfere with hormones to some extent - is this a possibility? It might be worth calling the Diabetes UK Helpline service to discuss things before approaching him, they are likely to be much better informed than me! They can be contacted at:

Did anyone ever check when he was growing up whether he had a 'lack of growth hormone' problem at all? - or are you (sort of) saying you don't think anybody cared that much about the chap, to try and find out?

I any event - isn't it all down to him if he needs/wants medical advice about this or his diabetes ? - he is quite firmly an adult!
