Hey all I need some help and I appreciate I should take some of my own advise when I reply to other people in need. So if you've not help me previously I recently had a telephone appointment with one of the Dr's (mines on Holiday) and I advised that I was worried as my sugars were high for me over 14 first thing in morning and understanderbly higher throughout the day with food. Dr advised to take 2 500mg twice a day and see how I get on. I have done now for coming up to a week. Tonight is the most severe of my tummy upsets. I limited my carbs and I feel that the 2 tablets is a shock to my tum. It is metformin sr which I know is nicer on tum than standard as that was horrible.

Does it take time for this to get used to or is this my body saying I cant handle 2 500 mg twice a day. Also I noticed that my sugars have dropped drastically after my tummy upset it has dropped to 6.2 within 15 mins of typing this. Can I take the 4 tablets throughout the day like one morning, lunch, mid afternoon and evening so it not such a shock?? thanks for support.

I am assuming you are talking about metformin..... Do you take them with food?

It could be that you don't tolerate metformin, there is a slow release version but they try and start you on the standard version as it's cheaper

Hey Martin yes sorry. Metformin I was on the normal and that was horrible. Then in March was on slow release. I was on 1 500mh twice a day and was fine. I now am on 2 500mg twice a day and evening though sugars are lower not feeling great. I am not sure if 2 500mg together is a big shock. I was wanting to know if I could take the 4 tablets spaced throughout the day as that may help? I had just chicken and veg tonight for dinner. I was not sure if my car intake as been more stricter on that has anything to do with that.

Hi Matt . I'm a little confused , I thought Metformin SR was taken with the evening meal, apologies if I am wrong. I suggest you speak to the GP today about your symptoms but first check the patient info leaflet they come with.
I hope you can get this sorted out soon as upset tums are not nice for you.

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately, even when I was on medication, I never needed to take too much metformin and so can't answer your specific question. But as Ljc says, it is probably worth having a chat with your GP about it if you're having problems with the meds.

Andy 🙂

Hope you get all under control soon matt .
